The dictionary is good. My problem was that when looking in the english side for a punjabi translation, the translation is actually written in punjabi script with no hints on the english pronounciation. I had to try (slowly) to spell the word out one letter at a time to find the meaning. Alternatively, I would have to look up the punjabi word in the other side of the book (the Punjabi to english bit) in order to find how to pronounce the word! Confused?
Overall this dictionary is still good. It as hard going to begin with but there is no doubt that it helped improve my knowledge of the punjabi alphabet and letter sounds. A useful purchase.
I am a complete beginner when it comes to learning Punjabi, not able to speak a single word! I had hoped that I would be able to use the dictionary to find the Punjabi equivalent of any English word I so desired. But, as the previous reviewer SCS quite competently pointed out, it is not that simple (note to self: must read the reviews of others more closely before purchasing books!). If you view the English portion of the dictionary in an attempt to find the Punjabi equivalent of a word then you will find that the majority of the translations are in Punjabi script. For someone with no knowledge or understanding of Pubjabi script that makes translation a trifle difficult. If you are prepared to put in the effort requried then there is little doubt that this dictionary will aid your understanding of the Punjabi alphabet and sounds. If, however, you are a complete novice looking for quick and easy translations then perhaps this publication is not for you.
I was extremely pleased with my purchase of this English><Punjabi dictionary by Dr K.K. Goswami, It is so comprehensive and even has translation for some slightly obscure words which i did not expect it to include. If you are learning punjabi this dictionary is a must have whether you are new to the punjabi language or like me are punjabi but UK born and speak it terribly!
