Outstanding collection of Punisher tales!, 21 Dec 2008
As a DC person myself, I'd never got into the Punisher character much in the past, other than the old Capcom arcade game and the dire movies. So it was with great reluctance that I accepted a friend's advice to read the Circle of Blood story arc (available as a hard back with nice cover). I was pleasantly surprised, and decided to fork out the forty quid for this super-sized ommibus edition, collecting the revamped Punisher, written by Garth Ennis.
The high paper quality of the pages and the print quality justifies the price, and if other omnibuses are similar, I may start purchasing more Marvel Omnibus Editions.
Story-lines deal with Frank Castle's methods of resolving crime in New York. Most of these methods involve the dispatching of mobsters via decapitation, shot-guns, other guns and knives, and the imaginative use of various lethal animal species.
I was surprised at some of the story lines dealt with, including racism, homophobia, corporate crime and police corruption to mention a few. It also touches on the hypocrisy of Frank Castle's mission to stamp out crime, with a couple of chapters dealing with the issue of other violent vigilantes, who are looking to the Punisher for leadership.
My advice to all readers, Marvel fans or not, is to immediately purchase this book. You get over 1100 pages of absolutely brilliant art work, together with a mature and extremely violent story. I suppose this is how the Punisher was always supposed to be (as opposed to the luke-warm violence of the recent Thomas Jane movie, though the new upcoming film looks far more interesting). In spite of the dark nature of the character, you do get many laughs whilst reading, usually because of an incompetent cop who helps the Punisher. The chapters dealing with Castle's conflicts with other Marvel heroes is also very well done.
A word of warning with such a brilliant book, you may need to book time off work, as there will be many late evenings reading the book, and you'll be unable to put it down. If you decide to follow the Punisher's lead and fight crime, the book is a perfect weapon, as it weighs a good ~5kg. At the very least, you'll develop Punisher style biceps reading the book every day.

Almost the definitive Punisher !, 5 Jul 2009
If you're a fan of either Garth Ennis or the Punisher and for some odd reason you never bought it in monthly format, then don't even bother reading these reviews, just buy it already. (Even if you did buy it monthly this is a great format and makes it really easy to read again).
Maybe not Garth Ennis's best work, I still think Preacher fits that requirement, but easily the best Punisher stories ever. For me there isn't a single issue that I felt Ennis disappointed.
The only downside is having got to the end, when are we getting the next omnibus edition with the rest of Ennis's work on the Punisher. What I want is all of Ennis's issues sitting on my bookshelf in this format. Then I'll have the definitive Punisher collection.
