4.0 out of 5 stars The punch bowl is a strong brew !, 16 Jun 2008

(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
Having come to the brilliant Seth Lakeman through his Mercury nominated 'Kitty Jay' and the follow up 'Freedom Fields' and having seen an electrifying live performance at Liverpool's Academy. I had procrastinated about getting Seth's first album which appears to have been lost from critical evaluation on the Amazon pages. I presumed that perhaps a younger Seth had been a 'finger in yer ear' Martin Carthy traditionalist and The Punch Bowl was full of earnest but dull renditions of sea shanties and songs about maiden's losing their....thingymagig.
In truth, The Punch Bowl is a pure Seth Lakeman album full of catchy riffs, wailing fiddles and those emotive vocals. With Cara Dillon providing sweet backing vocals and the rest of the Lakeman clan rustling up the instrumental backing, the album chunkers along apace and all too quickly...in a mere 28 minutes...ends.
Pity Seth couldn't have filled it out for another 10 or 15 minutes and it could have been a belter. Whatever...it's still a fine short piece of work from one of our finest Nu-Folk performer/composers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Seth's Fist & Best solo album to date (20-10-09), 20 Oct 2009
Like most people, Seth Lakeman came to my attention when he was on the Mercury Music Awards a few years ago - playing a jaw droppingly blinding rendition of 'Kitty Jay'. Since then I have seen him a few times live and have all his albums.

I have to say that this album 'The Punch Bowl' is still by far my favourite one of all his solo albums thus far - (including 'Poor Man's 'Heaven' but not 'Western Approaches' which in my opinion is his very very best - though not his solo - album).

The Punch bowl is a short album but by not being 'filled out' it maintains a genuine, authentic quality. Quite laid back compared to say 'Freedom Fields' and beautifully intimate.

This little album is Relaxed and confidently self-assured, unlike some of his later tunes that sometimes seem a bit 'strained' like he's trying a bit too hard.

This is an English Folk gem or our time - what will I'm sure become a classic reference album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Lakemen, 28 Sep 2009
By Tabbyiab (Dorchester, Dorset) - See all my reviews
I had already bought Sean's other albums when I purchased this earlier album. If you like Sean's music you will love this. Good honest traditional music delivered with real heart and soul. I have to say, I liked this album more than his most recent one.
