Better insulin management,
By Wiglere (England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Pumping Insulin: Everything You Need for Success on a Smart Insulin Pump (Paperback)
I got this book as a guide to insulin-pump management before actually going on a pump (which I hope is imminent), so my comments are not based on actually using a pump yet.
After over 40 years of diabetes I still learnt a great deal about the condition, and the difficulty of controlling it, and what an insulin pump can and cannot be expected to achieve. It seems to cover all aspects - insulin, carbohydrates, glucose, exercise, diabetes in children, in pregnancy, etc. I even found out things like why I go high after eating lots of nuts (protein is converted to glucose), which has always been puzzling. Everyone has their own varying metabolism, but this book gives the reader all that is needed to begin working out how to deal with the many aspects of control. I give four rather than five stars just because the book has not been adapted for the European market. As so often, the Americans have to be different in matters like the units used to measure glucose - the mmol/L equivalent, used everywhere else in the world, is often (not always) given, but it is a pain ploughing through all the mg measurements; likewise, all body weights are given in pounds instead of the international kg. It is also frustrating to read of the latest drugs available in US (Symlin in particular) which are unlikely to appear here any time soon. But these things aren't the author's fault.

Must have guide to pumping,
By
This review is from: Pumping Insulin: Everything You Need for Success on a Smart Insulin Pump (Paperback)
This book is excellent and I would recommended it to anyone who is thinking of, or is new to, using the insulin pump. It has lots of useful information and topics can be 'dipped' into as and when needed. It was recommended to me by fellow pump users and I'm certainly glad I took their advice. Highly recommended.

The Bible for Pumpers,
This review is from: Pumping Insulin: Everything You Need for Success on a Smart Insulin Pump (Paperback)
If you use an insulin pump and haven't yet read this book from cover to cover you are aimlessly flailing around in the dark. Even if you know everything there is to know about Diabetes you will still learn something new. Ignore previous reviews which say the American units make it hard to understand; this version has all UK/Canadian conversions printed. Buy this book and reduce your HbA1C now!
P.S. I have no connection with the author or publisher whatsoever (!), I just wish I had read this book when I started on the pump months ago...
