5.0 out of 5 stars THE BEST HORROR MOVIE EVER MADE, 16 Dec 2010
By
Mrs. V. F. R. Niekerk "horrorbuff" (South Africa) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Pulse [DVD] (DVD)
Yes, your read my heading right (my opinion, of course)
This movie, more than any other (and I've watched MANY horror movies in my lifetime - more than what was probably good for me) has affected me like no other.
It's not for everyone and I don't think everybody will like it - it's very slow to get going and generally has a slow pace (like almost all of the director's movies) but it is incredibly disturbing and severely frightening once it grabs hold of you.
I think the main character's face-to-face (literally) with the Grim Reaper near the end is one of the most bowel-loosening and terrifying scenes I've seen in a movie.
It's quite a philosophical movie, dealing with isolation, depression and the inevitability of death. Cheery stuff, to be sure.
We are all alone, this movie posits, and cut off from everyone else and true communication is severely limited. We can never make anyone else understand how we really feel. Language is inadequate - we are all horribly, eternally alone. Ironically, even more so in these Internet-obsessed, technologically advanced age.
I could not get this movie out of my head for days afterward and it still haunts me to this day. Yes, it has some Ringu elements (long-haired spectres ahoy!) but it uses these tropes in its own and original way.
There are absolutely mind-blowing set-pieces everywhere (the first foray into a red-taped room - brrrrr -, the dancing spectre in the arcade, the seated, hooded figure on the computer screen and of course the têtê-a-têtê with Death himself.)
Give this movie a chance and you might love it like I do.
Just be sure to take your anti-depressants first. Cheery stuff this is not. Oh, and check out the director's other stuff of you liked this - Cure is especially brilliant and unforgettable too.

5.0 out of 5 stars The most chilling movie ever made, 3 Dec 2010
This review is from: Pulse [DVD] (DVD)
I've been a horror movie fan since I was too young to watch horror movies, and this is easily my favourite. It's imaginative, original, and very chilling.

Pulse (the Japanese title is Kairo, which I've been told more accurately translates as 'Circuit') features two plotlines that eventually meet. One is of a young technophobic student who gets onto the internet for the first time and is freaked out when his computer directs itself to a creepy website which shows webcam images of people who look either depressed or dead. Thinking it is merely a computer virus at work, the student seeks the help of a computer expert, and she soon has a lot of time to help the student after all her friends start dropping out of sight.

The other plotline follows a group of workers at a plant nursery. One worker casually hangs himself in his computer filled apartment, yet after his death leaves voicemails intoning 'help me, help me' on the phone of a colleague who himself becomes very lethargic and depressed. Then the nursery's boss drops out of sight, leaving his two remaining workers wondering what on Earth is going on.

Soon enough the city of Tokyo - and indeed the world - seems to be getting very empty. People are vanishing, or shooting themselves, or throwing themselves off of buildings. Then there's the sight of front doors ominously sealed with red tape.

The best thing about this movie is that it doesn't treat the viewer like a dimwit. Things are not carefully explained, and indeed a lot isn't explained at all. One of the scariest aspects of this movie is that there is no concrete answer as to what is happening, just a theory suggested by one minor character almost in passing.

Overall it is immensely creepy. There are a few moments that are actually quite scary, such as when a silent ghostly figure walks and half-stumbles towards another character whilst he scrambles to hide under a sofa, but overall its the sort of movie that doesn't necessarily make you jump whilst watching it but instead clings to you when you to turn off the telly and go to bed. It's truly a masterpiece of terror.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unique and creepy, 14 Jan 2012
By
This review is from: Pulse [DVD] (DVD)
I don't believe anyone who says this film is not scary, i'm a huge horror fan and not easily scared so thats saying something! There are 2 memorable creepy moments for me and neither of them seem similar to ringu in any way. Pulse is an atmospheric masterpiece, many of the scenes left me feeling very uneasy. I admit that in the first part of the film i rolled my eyes a few times thinking to myself "Great, another average copycat film with dreadful acting" (Death bell is a good example of this!) but once it gets going, you really get sucked in. Also don't let the running time put you off or those who say its dragged out, its a complex story, what do people expect?. If your the type who wants easy scares and a predictable plot then look somewhere else. Obviously it's all down to personal opinion, but for £3 your in for a clever, genuinely creepy and beautifully haunting movie.
