This is a very nicely presented and extremely limited boxset containing limited editions of 4 of their albums.
Pulp, known for their sordid take on inner-city life really come into form by cd 2 although Jarvis' vocal style may suprise more recent fans (a bit Tony Bennet or something).
With lyrics like,
"there's a hole in her heart & one between her legs, you never have to wonder which one he's going to fill -in spite of what he says", you can't help but be drawn into seeing love and life through the eyes of a man who no longer has either.
Highlights include; Dogs are everywhere, Being Followed home, They suffocate at night, Don't you want me anymore?, My Legendary Girlfreind, Down By The River, Little girl with blue eyes, Mark of the devil & 97 Lovers.

Much has been said about Pulp's older material, but the fact remains that it simply is not up to the standard of more recent offerings such as "Different Class" or "His'N'Hers".
However, for the curious fan, this offers everything that the deleted "Countdown" compilation offered and mucb more - because this limited edition box set includes 4 discs, 3 of which are dedicated to their first 3 albums for the Fire label ("It", "Freaks" and "Separations") and the compilation of early singles and B-sides, "Masters Of The Universe", released in 1994.
Amongst the weaker material, there are some great tracks, particularly "Dogs Are Everywhere", "Love is Blind", "They Suffocate at Night" and the magnificent "My Legendary Girlfriend".
The packaging feels slightly tacky, and the original artwork is tucked away in the depths of the accompanying booklet, but for the curious fan, this offers just about everything you'll ever need from the Pulp back catalogue and is sure to be a collectors item in years to come.

Whee! 6 Sept. 1999

Instant early Pulp collection! Fun! I already own all these albums individually, but if you don't, you might as well have 'em all at once. To sum up: It is nice, in a naive sort of way; Freaks has many bland songs but also real flashes of brilliance, Being Followed Home in particular; Masters of the Universe is mediocre at best, and Separations is brilliant. I kinda wish they would've included some of the really obscure tracks that are virtually impossible to find otherwise here, but it's all good. There's plenty of great music in this set.
Essential 29 Jun. 2001

Sure, Pulp did not start out as strong as they could have, but for any true fan it is essential. Besides, it's cheaper than buying all 4 albums and the packaging is lovely.
