This book is giving me great pleasure, it is a treasure trove of gothic design from England and France drawn with affection by Augustus Charles Pugin, the father of the rather more famous Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin of House of Commons fame. It contains 100 plates, all in black and grey and white, from a variety of locations, all of which have their source location credited. It's interesting that some of the sources are from objects in Pugin's own collection; the Pugin's were avid collectors of architectural relics in the days when such things could be bought for very little or even acquired from rubbish bins. I digress, if you are a fan of Pugin (either of them) you will love this book, there is very little text but a feast of gothic ornament, a real treat for the eyes and it makes an excellent compliment to the early chapters of Rosemary Hill's "Pugin and the Building of Romantic Britain". Purchase both and be amazed.

Slightly disappointed by this book - everything is in monochrome. Not what I was hoping-for, and it doesn't satisfy my particular needs as a Master Woodworker and Limner working on objects and stage-settings of the medieval period for re-enactment. Having seen lots of full-colour pictures of Pugins completed work online, I was hoping for full-colour illustrations in the book. I am sure the book would be extremely helpful to other Artisans working in different Craft areas of historic-building-restoration and renovation, though.

A 6-star book! 5 April 2006
By Pio - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
On a scale of 1 to 5 stars, this books deserves 6 stars. I have looked at many of the Dover Pictorial Archive books and this one is truly exceptional. From the cover, I was expecting more gargoyles. But it contained excellent drawings of medieval architectural ornamentations. For example, one page will show a drawing of the relevant part of a building, eg. a gable on a building at Oxford Univ., and then the facing page will show drawings of close ups of the most interesting ornamental elements on the building and sometimes the sideviews of those elements. Lots of leaf and floral elements as was common then. It even cites the buildings. This is a true must-have book for especially wood artisans who want to do some fancy work.
