Product Description

Synopsis

The world's three puffin species which live around the northern rim of the Atlantic and Pacific oceans are among the most popular birds in the world. Many people who have never encountered puffins in the wild will still recognise the vivid colours, huge bills and chunky outlines of these comical seafarers. Kenny Taylor, an international expert with more than twenty years' field experience with puffins, provides readers with a broad survey of the current information known about tufted, horned and Atlantic puffins. He also addresses the many questions and challenges concerning the need to better understand and conserve puffins, and the fish and oceans which sustain them.

5.0 out of 5 stars boundless enthusiasm 14 July 2007
Format:Paperback
some time ago i had the pleasure of hearing Dr Taylor speak at a lecture to the public and i was delighted with his enthusiasm for his obviously much-loved subject. The book manages to convey this too, in a manner that retains useful scientific information but which is accessible to non-specialist biologists; quite an achievement and highly reccomended

5.0 out of 5 stars Comprehesive, great photos, 2 Jan 2000
By Angel Lee - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This is a wonderfully complete and attractive guide to one of nature's most interesting and beautiful birds. The similarities and differences in the 3 distinct puffin species are described, including maps showing their range.

The unique and fascinating behavior of puffins is explained in an entertaining way by the author who has great knowledge of and affection for these birds. Adaptations that have led to puffins' unusual appearance are documented.

Superb color photos include many close ups that show the characteristics of the 3 species. There are scenes of puffins feeding and nesting in colonies plus great action shots of birds in flight and diving underwater.

Natural and man made hazards to puffins and promising conservation efforts are reported. Puffins are very appealing to many people and this book presents the information we need to better know these birds.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great photography 18 Jan 2008
By J. Gustafson - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This book has beautiful photography. My only "complaint" would be that the cover isn't substantial enough, so it bends and creases.
