Product Description

Product Description

A retrospective of the Sixties tucked inside a gentle love story unfolds on Ireland's Puffin Island.

Paula is a free spirited, independent bohemian from Colorado. Tom is a straight-laced, pressed-suit Irish Catholic conservative from Dublin. Is there a place on Earth the two can just be...and be together?

Paula recounts her youth as a globetrotting vagabond following the ‘Summer of Love’. After her chance encounter with a self-proclaimed hot-blooded Irishman, she and Tom wrestle with the choices faced by all young people who came of age during the turbulent Sixties. Tom vehemently defends his faith and family values; Paula extols liberal western practices. Their struggle to find common ground takes them to Valentia and Puffin Islands in Ireland and to Rome where they promise to reunite in Paris to chart a future together.

But providence intervenes.

Four decades later when they attempt to reconnect, they find that in the high-tech 21st century world of Google, Facebook, and online social networks, sometimes a hand written note speaks louder than an e-mail.

A nostalgic reminder for those who survived that era and a tantalizing taste for the rest, Puffin Island is an old-fashioned tale of intrigue and human hearts... oceans apart.

About the Author

AUTHOR SHERRY SCHUBERT, named 2012 Writer of the Year by Idaho Writer's League, is a graduate of the University of California at Berkeley, Class of 1967. Subsequently, she spent two years hitchiking abroad, gathering grist for stories and a packful of dreams. "Life" called her back to her home state of Idaho where she raised a family and taught teenagers to solve quadratic equations. Ms. Schubert's yet to write fiction during retirement is precipitated by her daughter's observation, "I have no idea who you were before you were Mom." The author specializes in fiction appealing to contemporary women from Baby Boomers to Thirty-Somethings. "Puffin Island" attempts to relate how the historical events and social issues of the Sixties shaped the author and still reverberate in her children's lives today. "Celtic Compass, Part I," applies her experience in a "blended family" of the Sixties--before that term was coined--to present-day realities. "Celtic Compass, Part II", explores the challenge of divided loyalties faced by members of a blended family in a time of crises. In addition to her three novels, Ms. Schubert is a contributing author to the short story anthology, "Hauntings from the Snake River Plain." Sherry continues to live and write on the family farm. For the record, she did shake the hand of President Kennedy, and she did play the guitar... badly.

I enjoyed this so much that I immediately sought the sequel, which I have yet to read, but anticipate being every bit as good as this.

4.0 out of 5 stars Puffin Island 9 May 2011

Reading Puffin Island took me back to the sixties again. I completely relived growing up in this time period. The romance seemed fact, not fiction. I can't help but admire the intelligent, educated woman who wrote this. Then issues seem lived through, not just researched. I can't wait for the sequel. This was well worth the money.

Ms. Schubert created characters that seem so real. I find myself thinking about them and wondering what happens to them now. I look foward to reading more Schubert!
