Review

‘Wicked insight and amusement… the novel is unmistakeably Weldon’ Financial Times

‘Magical… she lays out the ingredients of her brew with a kind of manipulative glee, coolly moulding her characters and then neatly skewering them with mockery’ Daily Mail

‘Fay Weldon is a national treasure.’ Sam Leith, Literary Review

‘Weldon, like Dickens, can have her readers perched on the edge of their chairs with excitement by the end of the first page and hold them there in a state of riveted curiosity until the last words.’ Evening Standard

‘Weldon is a gifted tease of a writer.’ Sunday Times

‘Prolific and provocative, Fay Weldon shines brightest in the league table of British women novelists.’ Time Out

Product Description

A novel of urban deceit and rural passion, of doctors, witches, birth and death.

‘Many people dream of country cottages. Liffey dreamed for many years, and saw her dream come true one hot Sunday afternoon, in Somerset, in September… A trap closed around her. The getting of the country cottage, not the wanting – that was the trap.’

Richard and Liffey, a young married couple, follow their dream of moving out of London to a country cottage in the middle of Somerset. Richard continues to live and work in London, coming to stay with Liffey only on weekends.

Pregnant Liffey feels burdened, hampered, at the mercy of these biological impulses beyond her control.

Then there are the odd neighbours, the Tuckers, to reckon with, and the looming shadow of Bella, Richard’s lover in London, threatening the rural idyll Liffey had for so long imagined.

With wit and wisdom, Fay Weldon paints a funny and shocking picture of the conflicts within these seemingly conventional lives, conflicts which seem inevitably to stem from the eternal struggle between male and female.

The best of the best 26 Aug 2010
Format:Paperback
The story of Liffy, whose comfortable life suddenly becomes more and more difficult when she moves to idyllic Somerset.

Why is her husband becoming more distant? What secrets are her neighbours keeping? How many of her financial and emotional problems Liffy's own fault, and how many are the result of a magical curse she can do nothing about?

With its themes of jealousy, class divides, maternal love and disinterest, male apathy, power and acceptance, the book has plenty to intrigue the reader. And a new life is growing, and someone's fuure depends on Liffy sorting everything out for herself.

The best of Fay Weldon's excellent portfolio.

Although in my opinion Fay Weldon's literary talent is beyond genius, and all of her books that I've read so far are well worth any accreditation they may receive, Puffball is by far the best.

A readable and flowing novel, written in a simple but effective manner making use of the power of short sentences and lists. On a purely escapist level, Puffball provides a light and entertaining read.

However, those readers familiar to Weldon's work will recognise themes Weldon frequently touches on such as desire and the weakness of human nature and feminism. Set in Somerset, the influence of magic and mysticism was all too inevitable, but Puffball handles this in a subtle and convincing way, presenting a spiritual portrayal of the power of femininity, whilst still managing to introduce us to some likeable male characters I found myself truly warming to.

Before I read this book, Fay Weldon was only a name to me. On beginning it, I had no preconceived notions as to whether I was supposed to find Weldon a "great writer" or a producer of "low quality pap" and I really only picked up this book because the front cover illustration amused me. After a moment's hesitation before I got into the novel, I soon decided that Fay Weldon has a distinct narrative voice and a very natural way of representing the internal fears and passions of her characters. The main character, Liffey, is an innocent initially, but the novel takes her on a journey that opens her eyes to real life and the excentricities of men and women and their relationships. Although 'Puffball' has a very low key, understated mood, Fay Weldon somehow manages to create a growing feeling of tension as the plot progresses, and the novel culminates with a surprising and almost frightening ending. An enjoyable read from an insightful writer.
