5.0 out of 5 stars Tosca - Scarpia perfection!, 24 May 2004
By Armindo - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Puccini: Tosca starring Renata Tebaldi (Audio CD)
This is the rare 1958 Brussels Tosca with Renata Tebaldi, Giuseppe di Stefano and Ettore Bastianini under the gifted baton of Gianandrea Gavazzeni. Compared to the similarly cast '59 Scala Tosca, I find the Brussels Tosca even greater as a performance while the sound is better despite a few pitch problems.

Tebaldi's Tosca finally finds her ideal Scarpia in Bastianini. Both artists had two of the most glorious squillo voices and grand stage presences which works wonders for Puccini's masterpiece! Bastianini proves that Scarpia can be evil AND vocally sumptuous at the same time. In fact, I think he has found the golden cut! He is particularly outstanding in the forte passages which he does not shout but sing! What a pity he didn't record the role in studio with Tebaldi.

Speaking of Tebaldi, she was in pristine shape that evening, much better than a year later at La Scala, Livorno or in studio. This definitely ranks among her best live Tosca performances. Proud phrasing, Italian temperament and femininity are some of the aspects that made her "the grandest and most dignified Tosca" as a Greek critic put it. It's needless to distinguish a single phrase when the entire performance is as haunting as hers.

Di Stefano is marginally better here than a year later at La Scala but even in 1958, the wear in his voice is a sad experience. The lower regions still have their characteristic lyrical warmth but the higher the notes, the more unpleasant the sound. Even so, he is one of the most passionate and poetic Marios. Needless to discuss how welcome these three performers' perfect Italian is!

You won't find this performance easily but if you do, you will be awarded with one of the greatest live Tosca performances!

5.0 out of 5 stars My cup of Puccini runneth over with these cds!!!, 25 April 2002
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Puccini - Opera Highlights (Audio CD)
A blessing on DG for putting this together particular Panorama . It is literally an opera lovers dream come true! It's a rare 2 cd set that doesn't have a few dull spots. Not this one that contains the very best parts of 6 of Puccini's best known works and the heavenly voices of Freni, Tebaldi, and Ricciarelli opposite the magnificent voices of tenor stars Domingo, Carreras and Bergonzi. Not to mention Samuel Ramey's forbidding Scarpia, Raimondi's Timur, Hendrick's Liu, D'Angelo's Musetta plus a number of familiar names in supporting roles. Then we have Von Karajan, Sinopoli, and Batoletti as conductors. Is this opera lover's heaven or what?

If you are a Puccini fan you absolutely must have these cds. If you're not one, buy it anyway - you will soon be one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Puccini Hits With An Almost Great Cast, 20 Jun 2001
By Timothy M. Ballard "Puccini's Ghost" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Puccini - Opera Highlights (Audio CD)
OK... if you are going to listen to opera Puccini is a GREAT place to start. If you are going to listen to Puccini some of the best are here. Bergonzi's Che gelida manina is shimmering, likewise Domingo's Donna Non Vidi Mai is remarkable in its depth and beauty. NO ONE touches Tebaldi or Freni in Puccini rolse and like wise they both shine. I have about 3 recordings of Freni doing Manon Lescaut and she is UNSURPASSED (recording or live and I saw her at the MET!) Despite some rather odd choices like Carreras (who always sounds like someone beat the Chihuahua and made it SCREEEEEAM) and Katia Ricciarelli (AS TURANDOT - who is she kidding?) the CD is GREAT MUSIC and a great way to capture the beauty that is Puccini
