Reviews

Puccini's first major success is based around the 18th century novel by Abbé Prévost and tells the story of the doomed infatuation of Chevalier des Grieux for the beautiful, fun-loving Manon. This production was directed by Graham Vick, with John Eliot Gardiner conducting the London Philharmonic Orchestra.

The original DVD version was in stereo but this is in mono. This is a manufacturing problem by Kultur/Warner (they are identical). I had the exact same problem with their blue-ray issues of Don Carlos and The Makropulos Case - mono sound.

Many friends of Puccini, including the publisher Ricordi, warned him against competing with Massenet's internationally successful French opera Manon, premiered in Paris 1884.Puccini's response was" Massenet deals with Manon like a Frenchman, with powder and Minuets. I shall deal with the subject like an Italian, with desperate passion.".Puccini's inspiration was Abbe Prevost's "L histoire du Chevalier du Grieux et de Manon Lescaut by Monsieur D",(1731)which was banned,so it became popular.Prevost was born in 1697.He took holy orders as a Benedictine monk, but his taste for worldly pleasure, led him at the age of 31,to flee first to Holland and then London,to escape the church authorities from arresting him. This appealed to Puccini very much. This book was the basis for Massenet's opera,as it was for Balfe,Halevy and Auber's operas.Puccini only knew of Massenet's opera, for he had read the score of Manon. The premiere of that opera was only held in Italy in 1893.

Puccini's conception of Manon Lescaut was different to Massenet and Prevost. For instead of a Femme Fatale, she became a sympathetic figure who is a victim.Puccini had invented a new type of heroine, the little woman, which became Mimi,(La Boheme)Cio-Cio San(Madame Butterfly) and Liu(Turandot). There were six people involved in writing the libretto of this opera, firstly,Leoncavallo,Oliva,Praga,Illica,Giacosa and Ricordi, plus Puccini added some lines. The Premiere was held 1st February 1893,Teatro Regio,Turin. The opera became very successful. It was in this opera that Puccini finally found his voice at the age of 35.

The bluray is placed in a plastic holder, because it has a cardboard cover. There is a booklet placed next to the Bluray disc which is placed in a slit in the cardboard.
