The reason for the lack of popularity of this delightful work compared to the others in the Puccini canon has long been a great unsolved mystery.
I am tempted by the simple solution "Nobody dies!", but of course the reasons are far more complex. The slight plot-"kept woman leaves rich sugar daddy but returns to him so as not to cause her young lovers social disgrace"-is hardly a labyrinthine epic and the heroine does not catch consumption or commit "seppuko", and the hero has the effrontery not to get shot or lynched by a mob.
Of course, that is the whole point. Often described as in "Operetta Style", Puccini was concerned to provide an amusing and poignant vignette, a change from the heavily perfumed melodrama of his earlier works.
The style is different too-while the music could only ever be Puccini, this is more in the style of music drama rather than opera or operetta, with only one "killer aria" for soprano, and Ruggiero's Paris aria for the tenor.
The music and sung dialogue are interwoven in a constant stream of delightful inventiveness, with the recurrent motiv for Magda-La Rondine-expertly woven throughout.
There are constant presentiments of the exotic scoring of Turandot, and for me personally this is the work I turn to most often when feeling the need for Puccini!
It has done remarkably well in recording history, with excellent versions featuring a delightful Anna Moffo (the only internationally celebrated opera diva to have posed nude in Playboy) and more recently, te Kanawa and Domingo conducted by Maazel as part of his complete cycle.
This recording banishes all thoughts of these illustrious forbears.
Perfection is rarely achieved in recording, but this comes close.

As I have Anna Moffo singing this role, Angela Gheorghiu was such a disappointment as she was in the role at Covent Garden, missing many notes in the the first scene.

My first exposure to this opera was the Met live in HD broadcast with Alagna and Gheorghiu. Although Gheorghiu was somewhat under the weather on that occasion the music impressed me and hence I purchased this recording after listening to some other recordings from friends' collections.

This is probably the best and most well rounded recording of this opera currently available. It not being one of Puccini's 'blockbusters' there are fewer recordings around, but this is the only one you would need. THe score has the typical Puccini textures and there are a few show stopper arias along the way too. I would thoroughly recommend this recording.
