Format:Audio CD
I watched this on TV today; it was the BBC's "Christmas cultural offering" and very enjoyable. The stand-out here is Villazon (even if on film he looks rather louche, wild and unshaven, vocally he is impeccable) whereas Netrebko is as she always is: more than competent, beautiful of tone but rather bland - a voice very similar to, and almost as beautiful as, Mirella Freni's, without that artist's subtlety of shading, or ease and acuity with the text. The rest of the cast are also rather unmemorable, especially the baritone Boaz Daniel, whose Marcello pales beside predecessors such as Panerai - but the bass, Vitalij Kowaljow, is particularly impressive as Colline. Billy conducts sensitively and I can recommend this more heartily in its DVD form, as it is atmospherically directed and convincingly acted. Few people would be disappointd with it as an introduction to this evergreen opera - although some might miss the traditional high C's which Villazon eschews and for sheer listening either the Karajan (Pavarotti/Freni), Beecham (Björling/de los Angeles) or Votto (Callas/Di Stefano) versions are preferable.

What has happened to the several reviews including this one of my own.
La Boheme.
I am probably among the privileged few who have a DVD ,copied from VHS of the 1988 movie taped from RAI TV. This movie featured Barbara Hendricks as Mimi and an actor (excellent) miming to the voice of Jose Carreras. This was an absolutely brilliant movie and I doubt if it will ever be bettered. So I tend to compare all others with that one.
My first impressions of this movie was bad. It is shot with an aspect ratio of 2.35:1 and I have a 29in.TV at 4:3 so the picture occupied only about the middle third of my screen. That coupled with the fact the picture was very very dark, it was mostly all black on my screen. However after finding a Turbo button on my TV, and finding a DVD player that had a wide setting, the picture is light enough and there is only a 10% black band top and bottom now. Took several days to sort all this out.
While on the subject of complaints, I prefer leading men to be a bit more likeable and Rodolfo appeared as a scruffy, unshaven individual. Having said all that, the production, cast, singing and acting are excellent. I did not mind the occasional split screen shots and flash backs to love scenes. Also no complaint about actors miming which i did not notice. I preferred this version to several stage versions which I have and would recommend it, especially if you have a wide screen TV.
