Product Description

John Copley's enduring production of one of the most famously melodious and popular of all operas is a classic of the Royal Opera repertory. With historically accurate designs by Julia Trevelyan Oman and an excellent cast headed by Hibla Gerzmava and Teodor Ilincai, this 2009 revival, in which conductor Andris Nelsons makes a distinguished Royal Opera House debut, does full justice to Puccini's masterpiece. Filmed in High Definition and recorded in true surround sound.

Review

In every sense this Boheme glows. John Copley's legendary staging with stes by Julia Trevelyan Oman, first seen in 1972,is renowned for its authenticity and detail, both architecural and human.Full of telling little touches - the artist Marcello's Act II girlfriend is his Act IV model-they bring 19th century Paris's buste alive as effectively as any BBC classic,Far better than Zeffirelli's overblown Met effort or even the recent Netrebko/Villazon film. On DVD it looks and sounds Wonderful- a new recommendation. BBC Music DVD Choice. Performance ***** Recording ***** --BBC Music Magazine, sept 2010

Andris Nelsons conduts a well-paced performance. --Gramophone,Dec'10

Format: DVD
The opening set is on two levels, it is very good with a stairway connecting the two levels. The artists work area on top and seating below.
Rodolfo and Marcello portrayed by Ilincai and Viviana respectively have very good voices and are completely credible in their characters. Smoriginas and Imbrailo as philosopher and musician are likewise excellent in voice and character.
After the three have left and Rodolfo is alone Hibla Gerzmava arrives as a delightfully voiced Mimi, and it is obvious that their is a magic spark between these two artistes. Their duet as they leave for the cafe is absolute magic.
Act two is a very lively street scene and as the crowd thin out the cafe is revealed, it is well presented. When Inna Dukach arrives as Musetta she shows how this role should be played, her singing and acting is perfection. She is not even upstaged by the dog. Her waltz song is absolute magic.
Act three has suitably bleak gates to the city on a wintry day. The smokey guards hut is a master-stroke. There is a dimly lit cafe through which Musetta and friends can be just seen.
The outpourings of the main characters are very moving and Gerzmava produces some thrilling sounds.
In act four we are back in the studio, it is spring and the world is brighter, but our heroes are still impoverished. Marcello and Rodolfo are having creational problems and sing about it most pleasingly. They are joined by the other two and celebrate their meagre rations most amusingly.
The jollity is interrupted by Musetta leading a very poorly Mimi. All do what they can but eventually leave Rodolfo and Mimi who are absorbed in each other in a most engaging way.
As the others return and Mimi dies the excellent cast move me to tears, this does not happen often. Bravo!

I heard about this traditional rendition and subsequently enjoyed the DVD. Easy to follow plot (Not too many in the cast) and not too long - would serve as a good introduction to "lite" Opera? Thoroughly recommend.

Good job but no subtitles 21 Aug 2013

I enjoyed the look of this version but be warned there are no subtitles (at least not when I rented it). No problem if you're familiar with the opera. Well worth the rent.

La Boheme 30 Oct 2013

Overall, a strong production. Hilba Gerzmava as Mimi, sung the role beautifully. She truly has a lovely voice, and her acting was very well done. Gabriele Vivani performed as Musetta exacly the way I envisioned the role to be played, with youth, energy and exuberance. The only thing she was missing was the fire of romance and emotion. Teodor Illinica has a remarkable tenor voice, however his acting was not quite up to the caliber of his voice. Inna Dukach also has a fantastic voice, but lacked a bit in his acting. The staging was well done.

Gorgeous. Staging is wonderful. The singing is heart felt. I watched it several times already. No stand out performers - but all the voices are lovely. Always makes me cry.

mediocre at best 29 July 2013

While I am definitely a fan of Puccini and I do love this opera, this production left me as cold as Mimi's hands. The set was amateurish, costumes and makeup seemed to be poorly done. Voices were "ok" but no much more than that. The actors for one thing were MUCH too old - and looked it to be really believable. No subtitles. Musetta was "screechy". All in all, I'm actually glad that I got to see it before I decided to make a purchase.
