Product Description

iBooks Author is the first tool of its kind. Never before have publishers, authors, and content creators had a tool for making dynamic, interactive ebooks in a WYSIWYG environment. This book is intended to get you up and writing in iBooks Author. You’ll learn what to expect from this new tool and what its strengths and limitations are. You’ll see how you can create beautifully designed pages and how you can bring those designs to life with interactive content in ways that, before now, were only possible in a web browser on the Internet. You’ll also find out how to navigate the occasionally tricky terrain of Apple’s ecosystem so that you can get your book published to the iBookstore.

Incredibly Useful 26 May 2012
By Pilar
Amazon Verified Purchase
Publishing with ibooks author for the first time is a very long process, if you want to charge for your book. If I hadn't had this book to hand, I would have given up half way through, even though the software is ideal for my book which includes videos.

I would recommend you read the book through once before starting the process and then use it for reference when you are stuck. This will make sure you are ahead on the publishing process.

Lastly, make sure you have the new version of ibooks before you begin publishing.

Some Inaccurate information regarding license 8 Mar 2012
By W. Rogers - Published on Amazon.com
The part at the beginning about the license agreement is wrong in a number of ways.

You actually CAN export the book to a PDF and sell THAT any way you like.

And...

You actually CAN copy/paste the contents into Pages or Word or whatever, then make any necessary adjustments before saving as an ePub file, and you can then sell THAT.

The only time you're confined to selling through the iBooks store is when you:

1) Intend to charge for your book.

2) Sell it in the form of an iBook file

ALL content still belongs to the author/publisher! NOT Apple.

The rest of the book appears to be good primer.

Great Intro to iBooks Author and Publishing to the iPad 10 Mar 2012
By Will Kelly - Published on Amazon.com
I read Publishing with iBooks Author because I am scoping out the iBooks format for some potential personal projects. As a technical writer, I know that eBooks are part of my professional future as well. The book serves as a great introduction to iBooks Author even for those without extensive electronic publishing experience.

The book starts with a tour of the application that provides feature and interface details on this very well designed authoring application. Chapter 2 delves into Book Building Basics that while second nature to many publishing professionals including print jockeys takes on some added wrinkles especially when it comes to widgets and interactivity. I was happy with the book's approach in Chapter 3. While iBooks Author includes a powerful text editor (along the lines of the excellent Apple Pages or so it reminds me of), if you are like me you are going to import content from a document to publish - so I found the directions on importing a text file to be especially useful (and my favorite part of the book).

Other strong parts of the book include the details on formatting, table creation, and styles, which seem like they would consume a big chunk of the publishing process. However, the details in this book are rich enough to help new iBooks authors plan their publishing process with a little bit of forward thinking.

There is also great information about creating and managing non-text elements in your book called "Objects" in Chapter 4, which dives into detail about using the Graphics tools in iBooks Author. Non-graphics people will find help in this chapter to publish a graphically rich iBook. Chapter 4 also delves into widgets and inserting media that are integral in producing enhanced or interactive iBooks.

The Layout Chapter is also first rate and helpful to readers with all levels of publications design experience. I found it easy to follow and well illustrated.

After addressing all of the gritty technical details of using iBooks Author, the book ends out with a chapter devoted to publishing the book you've been painstakingly working on with iBooks Author from previewing it on an iPad through submitting your book to the iBookstore which with Apple means a detailed process that uses another application called iTunes Producer and the book delivers in breaking down the process handily enough even for readers new to the world of electronic publishing to grasp.

After reading this book, I feel completely confident I could publish a book using iBooks Author and heartily recommend it to anyone seeking to learn more about iBooks Author or the technical aspect of publishing an iBook.

Concise and well-thought out book 9 Mar 2012
By Doron Katz - Published on Amazon.com
The recent iBooks Authoring tool released by Apple has given amateur book writers and enthusiasts a direct enablement to self-publish their own interactive books to Apple's bookstore, in a similar way that developers have been given access to the app-store. Nellie McKesson delivers soon after the iBooks Authoring release with a handy book that guides the user through the basics of laying out the structure of the book.

#more

The author does well in articulating the various scenarios that may affect layout of the book, such as the orientation position of the iPad and with a good selection of illustrations, the book is able to depict clearly to the basic of users how to author their book.

Naturally, as a web developer you would have an edge in creating interesting widgets, but for most of the audience, this book does well in being able to utilise the existing product assets to create a compelling iBook. The author also delves into the current issues associated with ownership of the iBook content that was briefly twittered about in the blogosphere recently which provides a good conceptual understanding for the reader of the issues faced with going down this path. The book is short and easy to read, I am a bit fan of precision books and give it a good thumbs up..
