I teach iBooks Author to publishers. In the course of preparing the teaching I reviewed a number of books and other instructional materials. In the end it boiled down to two sources of information. This book and the in-app help. The book covers much more than the help and provides invaluable insights that only an independent author can do.
One point- iBooks Author doesn't make particularly good PDFs, not all the media types it handles translate. There are better tools out there. Also, most (nearly all) of the media types that you can put in an iBook won't work in ePub. Unsurprisingly, iBooks author is for iBooks - rich media publishing for the iPad.
Quite frankly at free or very low cost getting this book is a no-brainer. Have fun!

I've been self-publishing non-fiction for 15 years so I found Publishing with iBooks Author a clear and thorough guide to taking the next step and getting some of my titles into the iBooks store.
Anyone who is familiar with producing books using Microsoft Publisher, InDesign or Serif PagePlus will find iBooks Author reassuringly familiar but entering into a contract with Apple seems a bit mysterious and perhaps a bit unnerving so I found the description of this process particularly useful.

There are not too many resources around on how to use iBook Author, and a lot of it is really trial and error. This doesn't answer every question, the main iBook Author forum can help in that area, but it covers a lot and it really does help in many areas. If you use iBook Author get this book, it will help.

Publishing with ibooks author for the first time is a very long process, if you want to charge for your book. If I hadn't had this book to hand, I would have given up half way through, even though the software is ideal for my book which includes videos.
I would recommend you read the book through once before starting the process and then use it for reference when you are stuck. This will make sure you are ahead on the publishing process.
Lastly, make sure you have the new version of ibooks before you begin publishing.
