Product Description

Review

"...this is a wonderful and indispensable book. Would that we had treatments of other aspects of publishing to this standard. There are a few, but not many. This book is probably the king." Anthony Watkinson, The Publishers Association

'Jones and Benson is the best book on publishing law available and is a must for all serious students of the profession as well as a necessary refresher and aide-memoire for all practising publishing professionals.' - Professor Iain Stevenson, Centre for Publishing, University College London, UK

'A highly useful and informative handbook to the world of publishing law' - Angus Phillips, Director, The Oxford International Centre for Publishing Studies, Oxford Brookes University, UK

'You would imagine that any book with the word 'law' in the title might be guaranteed to be a dry read. Not so Publishing Law. The language is clear, the law made clear and above all it is an approachable text. This new edition explains the Digital Economy Act 2010, making it a 'must read' for all involved in publishing.' - Jane Moody, Head of Publications, Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, UK

Product Description

Publishing Law is a comprehensive guide to the law as it affects the publishing process. Written by the Copyright Counsel of the Publishers Association and a practising solicitor with many years experience of the publishing trade, this work will serve as a comprehensive handbook for all those who need a practical understanding of where and how the law may apply, including publishers, authors and agents, and all those involved with published material.

Hugh Jones and Christopher Benson address a range of key legal issues in the publishing process, including:

  • copyright, moral rights, commissioning and contracts, including online and e-book issues
  • libel and other legal risks such as negligence, privacy and obscenity
  • infringement and defences such as fair dealing, trademarks and passing off
  • consumer law, data protection, advertising and promotion, distribution and export

This fully updated fourth edition features:

  • full coverage of electronic rights and e-commerce issues
  • up to date coverage of changes in EU and UK legislation, including the Digital Economy Act 2010

Legal points are explained with reference to important statutes, cases and relevant trade practices. A revised glossary, lists of useful addresses and further reading are also provided.

Publishing Law 25 Oct 2010
By Tom
Format:Paperback
Publishing Law by Hugh Jones, Chris Benson, Christopher Benson
Considering its rather dry subject matter, this is a very well written and, most importantly, for me, accessible book which I have read as a primary text for an MA in Publishing. Highly recommended as so often these professional readers are too heavy and jargon laiden to be of any real benefit to the student.

Recommendation for the Publisher... (and Note for purchaser) 1 July 2011
By Jason Bradley - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
The book is exactly what the description says that is. The only thing I wish I had done, before rushing to purchase: Click to look at the paperback (or hard cover) edition and "Look Inside" at the Table of Contents. If I had done that I would have realized the book's focus is on U.K. & European Union Publishing Law. If I had read the editorial reviews, I probably would have been able to guess the focus would not be on U.S. law.

I would recommend the publisher update the product description to reflect the body (or bodies) of law that the publication focuses on.

I'm keeping the book, as the information will still be extremely useful to be able to reference & research.
