5.0 out of 5 stars A practical guide to self-publishing, 10 Oct 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Publishing a Book: A Practical Step-by-step Guide to Independent Publishing (How to Books : Successful Writing) (Paperback)
This book is aimed at authors who want to publish their own work. It is easy to read, with clear instructions, full of practical tips, covering everything the author-publisher needs to know, from concept to ISBN registration and marketing. Aimed especially at self publishing authors in the UK. I always recommend this book to those of my writing students who are considering publishing their own work. It will save them from time- and money-wasting pitfalls.

2.0 out of 5 stars Far too reserved., 8 Oct 2001
This review is from: Publishing a Book: A Practical Step-by-step Guide to Independent Publishing (How to Books : Successful Writing) (Paperback)
Whilst a book aimed at those considering self publishing does need to emphasize the need for restraint, I personally felt that this book went a little too far. New writers need to be encouraged to explore new horizons and new technologies. If they have confidence in their work and genuinely beleive there is a market for their book, then they should give it a go. The book failed to cover the need for effective market research and for some unknown reason, almost seemed to be anti computer. Virtually all publishers now use the technology of computers and many even print direct using either high speed laser, or digital printers to give the finished copy. This book needs a radical update to bring it into the 21st century!

2.0 out of 5 stars too old fashioned, 29 July 2001
This review is from: Publishing a Book: A Practical Step-by-step Guide to Independent Publishing (How to Books : Successful Writing) (Paperback)
I am amazed at this book, the author spends his time councilling us on the dangers of computors. For picking typefaces he suggests we get a letraset catalogue (letraset!) personally I was delighted to see the end of letraset when it vanished from view some years ago. This book was written in 1993, although it has been updated three times the last time in 1998, my view is it should be scrapped and re-written by someone a bit more in touch with the times.
