5.0 out of 5 stars So - You Want To Publish 11 Dec 2010
By M. Dowden HALL OF FAME TOP 50 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I am not intending to suddenly release a book on the unsuspecting public, but I was curious to know how one went about it on Amazon. With the sales of kindle being good, obviously more people are buying ebooks. Alright, your market isn't as big as if you were published in normal book form and had a giant publishing house behind you, but you can still make money.

There are a few typos in this (you bad boys at Amazon), but regardless of that it is a quick and easy overview of how to go about it all. Give me an internet connection and I can find information really quick, but when it comes to something like word processor programs, because I don't use them all the time or all the different aspects of them I am rusty, but I could easily understand everything here. There is an active table of contents as well as email addresses where you can find more details. You can also access some of these from inside the book itself, so make sure you have your browser option on, although the kindle does display a page when clicking on this to remind you. Your actual book ideally should be transmitted in HTML format, and this explains all this along with copyright, pricing and royalties. As well as contacting Amazon if you have a problem or need any more information there is the web address here for the forum, and for the FAQs section.

If you are thinking to publish for the kindle and unleash your masterpiece upon the world, then it makes sense to download this and get some idea of what you have to do. The best thing is, this ebook is free.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simples! 24 July 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This was a fantastic book which I downloaded onto my kindle.
I had just finished my first novel - a philosophical thriller, titled; Apotheosis - but hadn't a clue how to format it for kindle.
This book took me through the process in a simple, straightforward way and in less than an hour I had uploaded my book, reviewed it, made some corrections and re-uploaded it. Within 12 hours the review team put it online at amazon and I'm very pleased with the finished result.
The process did seem daunting but it would have cost hundreds of pounds to pay a professional to do the job. However, anyone - with a basic knowledge of microsoft word and a bit of patience - can achieve fantastic results by downloading this gem of a book.
Highly recommended!

I wanted to publish a book on behalf of a friend, so I downloaded this. I followed the steps and it more or less worked.

However, I use linux and OpenOffice/LibreOffice rather than Word, so I prepared the text slightly differently. Firstly I got the document in .odt/.doc format exactly as I wanted it, including an active index. This means that you click on an item in the table of contents, and it takes you to that chapter. LibreOffice created this using page-breaks I inserted into the text. I also used linked (NOT embedded) images in a subfolder called /images. Then I exported the docunment as an .html file. This preserved all the internal links but not the all the formatting, so I edited this in an .html editor (Kompozer) to tweak and centre the images.

Next, I wanted an idea as to how this would look on Amazon, so I downloaded the latest version of the free software Calibre to convert the .html into Kindle compatible .mobi format. After this I tweaked my .html file until I was satisfied with the output.

Now we come to the interesting bit. During the publishing process I uploaded both the zipped .html file and the Calibre created .mobi file to see which was handled better by the Amazon Kindle converter. In my case, the .mobi file produced far better results. So, as a result of my experiences I would recommend using Calibre to create a .mobi file, rather than relying on Amazon to convert your .html file correctly.
