5.0 out of 5 stars So - You Want To Publish 11 Dec. 2010
By M. Dowden HALL OF FAME TOP 50 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I am not intending to suddenly release a book on the unsuspecting public, but I was curious to know how one went about it on Amazon. With the sales of kindle being good, obviously more people are buying ebooks. Alright, your market isn't as big as if you were published in normal book form and had a giant publishing house behind you, but you can still make money.

There are a few typos in this (you bad boys at Amazon), but regardless of that it is a quick and easy overview of how to go about it all. Give me an internet connection and I can find information really quick, but when it comes to something like word processor programs, because I don't use them all the time or all the different aspects of them I am rusty, but I could easily understand everything here. There is an active table of contents as well as email addresses where you can find more details. You can also access some of these from inside the book itself, so make sure you have your browser option on, although the kindle does display a page when clicking on this to remind you. Your actual book ideally should be transmitted in HTML format, and this explains all this along with copyright, pricing and royalties. As well as contacting Amazon if you have a problem or need any more information there is the web address here for the forum, and for the FAQs section.

If you are thinking to publish for the kindle and unleash your masterpiece upon the world, then it makes sense to download this and get some idea of what you have to do. The best thing is, this ebook is free.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Worthwhile Read 9 Mar. 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I made this purchase as my partner was approaching the publishing decision for her second book so that we could ascertain the benefits or problems that e-publishing would yield. From those viewpoints , it has been a useful and worthwhile read

I wanted to publish a book on behalf of a friend, so I downloaded this. I followed the steps and it more or less worked.

However, I use linux and OpenOffice/LibreOffice rather than Word, so I prepared the text slightly differently. Firstly I got the document in .odt/.doc format exactly as I wanted it, including an active index. This means that you click on an item in the table of contents, and it takes you to that chapter. LibreOffice created this using page-breaks I inserted into the text. I also used linked (NOT embedded) images in a subfolder called /images. Then I exported the docunment as an .html file. This preserved all the internal links but not the all the formatting, so I edited this in an .html editor (Kompozer) to tweak and centre the images.

Next, I wanted an idea as to how this would look on Amazon, so I downloaded the latest version of the free software Calibre to convert the .html into Kindle compatible .mobi format. After this I tweaked my .html file until I was satisfied with the output.

Now we come to the interesting bit. During the publishing process I uploaded both the zipped .html file and the Calibre created .mobi file to see which was handled better by the Amazon Kindle converter. In my case, the .mobi file produced far better results. So, as a result of my experiences I would recommend using Calibre to create a .mobi file, rather than relying on Amazon to convert your .html file correctly.

4.0 out of 5 stars Useful Guide to Kindle Publishing 10 April 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Having written a comic novel some years ago but deterred from pursuing its publication through the then available traditional routes I was delighted to discover that this could be done through Kindle Publishing Direct. After following the few simple steps outlined in this guide my novel 'Belle Apocalypse' is now available to a worldwide audience via Amazon Kindle.

I would recommend to anybody wishing to publish their book that they download this free guide which explains how to do this in clear and simple steps.

3.0 out of 5 stars Okay for literary works 28 Dec. 2012

I really want to publish children's picture books and this book really didn't help me. I still don't know how to do it which is a real shame. Would love it if a dedicated section or book was published, I'm sure there are others like me who would like to take this route.

4.0 out of 5 stars Useful tool for publishing 21 Mar. 2014

Signing up, Content Rights, Book List Rights, Kindle Book Lending, Sales and Payments are just a few of the Headings in the "Contents" section. Most of the book is written up in clear, straightforward language. If you want to know what text to use, there is a list of all the possibilities. You are taken through all the steps of information required regarding your book eg Title, language required, Book Contributors, Search Keywords.and so on. Everything is clearly explained. You are also give specific instructions as to how to expect payments to come through to you. You are given the choice of receiving US$ or UK£ or Euros. You are also taken through all the steps of uploading your book. The recommended size for the image cover is 600x800 pixels.
One thing I could not find in the taxation imformation was the amount of US tax.that needs to be paid. I just happen to know that it is 30%, and to pay a reduced witholding tax eg the UK and the US have an agreement not to double tax, you actually need to go through a very complicated process which involves sending your passport to Texas to be viewed.
