When someone asked me the other day why I liked this album (they are no fan of Lady Sov & I'm rather older than her usual audience, I suspect) I said it was because it always puts a smile on my face. They asked if that was because it was so bad it was funny or purely because it was actually entertaining - I think it could be both but I really don't care. Music should resonate with you, entertain you, or both & Lady Sovereign entertains non stop.
There are some belting tracks on here, I particularly like "My England" , "Those Were The Days", "Hoodies" & her excellent "solo" version of "9 to 5" ("Tango" is the poorest of the lot & sounds like a charver trying to sound superior). Some of her lyrics are very clever (there is some real potential in there), some less so,sometimes bordering on the inane ("Tango" being a case in point) but music doesn't always have to be "serious" does it ? Take it all with a pinch of salt & enjoy the ride. Make way for the S - O - V !!!

Hugely Talented 28 April 2007
Format:Audio CD
I will be upset if Lady Sovereign doesn't do well in the UK. I bought this album over 6 weeks ago and have not stopped listening to it. It's a brilliant mix of sounds and a unique vocal with great, quirky lyrics which talk about today. She's got good humour too which is more than you can say for a lot of recording artists. It has to be one of the exciting debut albums I've ever listened to and I'm sixty, so I've heard a few.

I'm with IWFIcon on this as here is a seriously under promoted talent in the UK, though one with a long standing loyal on the boards following that deserves seriously better exposure to the UK market but again, tim-ing is of the essence.. though I have to adnit I'd seriously love to see Lady Sov.. succeed big time...

This is a refreshing and amusing and ( at times make me laugh out loud at the verbal desterity and creativity) with the 'pint sized midget' chantreuse- rappeuse belting out an engaging mixture of hip hop rap social commentary as 'street smart UK jive' ...a combination of voices she can throw out being from cheeky council estate chavette urchin to ragga dub UK princess with a 'bleck' streak.. she's immediately engaging, admirable and the act you woudl love to put money behind just to see her hit the charts...

It's amazing that this ( inevitably 'female Eminem' comparison) talent hasn't taken up the mainstream position in the Uk that the ubuqitious white male rapper has in the world stage... like Eminem and 'Slim shady' she adopts an alter -ego persona ' S.O Veeeee' which I agree ( if you are not smitten by her act) could be irritating but personally I was bowled over by her lyrical versatility and 'cheeky monkey' gobby female attitudes right from the opening '9 to 5' which sums up the shop girl mentality better than anything i have heard before to the closing cover live stage version of the Sex Pistols 'Pretty Vacant' which works with it's chavish 'OY OY OY' chant and driving beat and girly-gang vocals..

Lady Sov does exactly what she says on the tin 'I can only do one thing,,, and that's be Lady Sovereign' with a pugnacious and utterly wining vocal confidence.. she throws out huge convuluted rapido sentences in lightening-like MC strut then slides down into nursery rhyme snippets in charming yet acutely observational cuteness... no one should mistake that there's a keen brain behind this persona...some wonderfully english pastiche tracks like 'My England.. we're not all posh like the queen'' which if listened to seriously are as relevant social commentary on the inner city UK lifestyle as Dylan's immortalised phrases... I loved the bullying vitriol of 'Tango' where she mercilessly rips up on the Essex girl with too much fake tan..using several commercial themes on the 'Orange' tag, the signature 'Love me or Hate Me' which has to be a Chav Girl anthem if ever there was one... ' 3 cheers for the S.O. V' as the 'Posh' English would say...at times she's got an almost Gary Glitter-esqe 'My Gang' feel about her ( can we still say that without admonition?..) and I for on definetly belong to the 'love' camp rather than the 'hate'... if you want to see ingenuous and creative female hip hop at it's UK best then you should definitely sign up to 'Sov's' gang...I would definately play her on my internet radio station and she is one of those 'like to meet' characters..

On a side note if you go to her website and myspace you will get a link to a brilliant NYC female hip hop rapper named MC Jah Jah - her CD isn't available on Amazon ( BUT should be !!!) but is is on I-Tunes and she's superb...!! I have both these CDs now in the car collection.. guaranteed to make you smile with their inventive qualities and beats..
