As a City of London guide I'm always looking for reliable info. to help solve the many mysteries which surface regarding lost artefacts. From the review of the book it seemed it might be helpful and, having flicked over it to check on facts I knew were correct, I decided to buy it.
For some years there has been a query as to the whereabouts of the Wilkes "obelisk"
one of two which used to stand in Ludgate Circus. The obelisk of Waithman is the centrepiece of Salisbury Square. So where was Wilkes?
From this book I found that the Wilkes one had been removed from Ludgate Circus in 1950 but was found to have been damaged by sinking into the gentleman's lavatory underneath and was now irreparable.
There are also clearer photos of various monuments and artefacts than those I have already found. Everything has been deeply researched and the footnotes are detailed so that I can research further if I wish to do so. Well worth the money!
