5.0 out of 5 stars Frank bows out on a high..., 12 Aug 2008
I wholeheartedly agree with the previous reviewer; it's a shame that this was the last ever series (Alfred Burke feeling that the move away from Thames would be detrimental to the future development of the series). Anyway, this is a much, much stronger series than the 1972/73 season with Frank moving his office from Windsor to Chertsey via a couple of episodes in partnership with the less scrupulous Ron Gash. But Frank is nothing if he's not a loner, genuinely interested in the human story as opposed to the fees (his £6.00 a day plus expenses goes up to £8.00 during the course of the series!). Thirteen episodes full of classic mid-seventies British drama, an era which put much more emphasis on beautifully-paced, character-driven plots than today's vapid nonsense fit only for teenagers with the attention span of Basil Brush (sorry, Basil!). In short this Box-set will disappoint no-one, whether they are die-hard fans or someone who can remember when British television was full of integrity and confidence.

5.0 out of 5 stars Marker's Way, 30 Jun 2008
By Mark Boulton (North Somerset) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is the last chapter in the series. Made in 1975 Alfred Burke once again provides a superb performance in the role of the down beat private eye Frank Marker. After a near death experience Marker decides he's had enough and decides to call it a day. Firbank suggests that he team up with an old police colleague who has turned private eye. So Marker joins forces with Ron Gash but it does not go to plan. It is clear that the relationship will not continue so Frank moves on this time to Chertsey and rents premises from the railway. Although a little shabby its Frank's domain and continues to display the name of the previous tenants Apollo Ariels. This box set contains all 13 episodes in colour. Another series not to be missed. Shame it was the last.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unsung Gems of British Drama, 25 Jan 2010
By Ian Mayes "moggymayes" (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The late Alfred Burke as Frank Marker in Public Eye. An unsung absolute gem of British drama. At the time this series was aired, it had ratings equally on a par with Coronation Street in terms of popularity, but it was a great deal more than that! The performances, story lines, and locations were absolutely top class, making the series essential viewing. Burkes portrail of Marker, the down at heel private eye, was superb. Really I cannot recommend this series more highly. Unlike the wishy washy half baked story lines and acting we see today, this series defines what the art of true drama is about. With good strong characters, great scripts, and episodes that hook the audiences attention from start to finish, who could ask for anymore of a drama series. So, why did it end? There was a change in the law that stated that ex-cons could not be private eyes. The series therefore became none current, and was dropped. The fact that the series would not be continued was plastered all over the tabloids at the time. Damn shame if you ask me. It was a highly popular series, and all lamented its passing.
