Reviews

Alfred Burke stars as down-at-heel inquiry agent Frank Marker in this critically acclaimed, long-running drama series. Always working the lower end of the spectrum divorces, missing persons, bankruptcies the highly sympathetic character of Marker found great affinity among the viewing public, with Public Eye's enormous popularity enduring throughout its ten-year lifespan and beyond.

In common with many series made in the 1960s and 70s, a large number of episodes were junked; this complete set contains every surviving episode, together with a wealth of special features.

Network have done us dedicated fans proud with this fine boxed set which contains all the surviving episodes including `The ABC Years'. The 17 newly designed DVDs are neatly presented in 2 cases inside a box, the stark graphite design clearly understood by those who have a feel for the series. In addition to the episodes there is much additional material including 2 interviews with Alfred Burke, an interview with Roger Marshall who devised the series with Anthony Marriott and a wealth of PDF material. Also included is the stunning 260pp paperback book by Andrew Pixley `Public Eye, Six Guineas a Day Plus Expenses' and in this highly detailed book you will find a wealth of background information. You will even discover hidden facts such as all the music played in the hotel lounge in `Unlucky for Some' and the names of all the support actors not mentioned in the credits. You get to understand the complex reason why, in the age of colour, some episodes had to be filmed in b/w in 1971. It is an amazing book and I just could not put it down. It doesn't end there, Network also include an 18 page glossy booklet to accompany series four and being a guide to that series, this booklet also includes an un-aired short story. The whole thing is a well produced treasure, a delight to own.

In the persona of down at heel private enquiry agent Frank Marker, Alfred Burke (Alfie) brought to life one of the most believable characters ever to be seen on British Television. There is something of Frank Marker in the hearts of the many fans, myself included, something so incredibly hard to define but so inescapable. Alfred Burke himself once said that there is something of him in Frank and there is no doubt he felt the part and lived Frank to the full in his compelling role.

As someone who was a little too young to remember this series first time around on tv and having heard so many positive things about it I decided to take the plunge and buy this boxset to get all the episodes together in one package. It includes two plastic cases, the first has nine discs which includes the surviving five episodes of the abc years, the complete 69 series and the complete 71 series with a few extras like PDF material,an audio recording, two interviews with Alfred Burke, one with Roger Marshall and an extract from it must be the architecture can't be the climate.there is also a small booklet that has series 4 special edition written on it with series introduction, overview and un-aired short story by Roger Marshall.the second plastic box has eight discs covering the complete 72/73 and 75 series with no extras.along with the two plastic boxes of discs there is a 260 page paperback book called six guineas a day plus expenses which claims to be the definitive account of the series.all episodes are in non widescreen 1.33.1 aspect and have no subtitles.the sound quality is very clear throughout and the picture especially in the later colour episodes is very good indeed.the only negative is that the outer box that holds all the items together is made from the flimsiest cardboard.I would recommend this to anyone that hasn't already bought the individual series separately.this set definitely surpassed my expectations, great character driven stories and a truly superb central performance from Alfred Burke
