Take a Map! 16 Jan 2007
Format:Paperback
The Walks themselves are really good and take you to some beautiful parts of Kent, and some really good pubs. However, the book is now 13 years old, two of the pubs have since shut, and many of the directions are either out of date, or vague, or open to various interpretations. The hand drawn maps are not particularly helpful in terms of orientation.

So buy the book, enjoy the walks, but look at the route on an OS Map first, and then take that map with you so you don't get lost.

If you're up for longer walks, we find the Michael Easterbrook book better.

Ordnance Survey Explorer maps 136,137,138,147,148,149,150 cover the county well - you don't need them all at once!

Happy Walking!

I've done five walks from this book over the last year, and have now given up on it.

Perhaps I'm expecting more from a walking guide that's 16 years old, but the extent to which this is outdated really needs to be brought to any potential purchasers attention. The pub descriptions are very detailed, to the extent of typically being longer than the directions, but since most of these pubs probably don't have any of the same staff two decades later, this is meaningless. Many of the routes have sections where footpaths have been rerouted and stiles or gates changed - a problem when these are extensively used as landmarks for the directions.

The directions were probably bad enough in 1994, for instance, "remain on the track until it becomes metalled then turn right" isn't tremendously helpful when there are several changes in track surface and several right turns; and especially not when the distance is almost a mile. Directions such as "turn into the field of hops" couldn't really be expected to be useful for more than a couple of years, and certainly aren't now. Some are just completely wrong and most likely always were, such as "climb the stile on the right besides the inn" which was in fact on the left.

The flaws in the directions might be more forgiveable and easy to work around if the maps were not so awful. They are hand drawn, using a legend defined for no apparent reason on walk 3, list only the barest details of track type and barriers, and are not even roughly to scale. There are no field boundaries marked, and woods are done in a haphazard fashion. Distances that appear as though they should be a hundred yards turn out to be a quarter mile.

Finally there is little detail given of sights or history along the route. The few sentences that are there are separate from the directions, so there's no indication of when to look out for what.

Caution needed 29 Aug 2009
Format:Paperback
I bought this book about 12 years ago and enjoyed most of the walks, but recently we have tried some of them again and found that several of the pubs are now private houses and a few of the footpaths have been diverted, so an OS map is essential. Even 12 years ago I remember some of the directions were rather ambiguous. It's a shame this book couldn't be updated as the walks are actually very enjoyable (if you can find the way).
