The first thing that struck me about this little book was how pretty it was! I was almost afraid to open it in case I left a paw-print on the pages, or bent back the spine. A small hardback, with the original text layout and line-drawings by E. H. Shepard, it is a thing of beauty and a joy forever!
As for the translation - I found it quite easy to understand. Even with my shaky grip on the German language, I was able to enjoy the stories without constantly reaching for a dictionary. The translator seems mostly to have preserved A. A. Milne's idiosyncratic way of telling the story and this version 'felt' very similar to the English original in the way the phrases are structured.
The stories about Pooh and his friends are witty and sweet and can be enjoyed by all ages. If you only know Pooh Bear from the Disney Cartoons you are missing out on so much - the characters in the books have great personalities, with very human foibles and failings; Pooh's greediness, Piglet's cowardice, Rabbit's bossiness or Eeyore's pessimism and sarcasm. Make sure you also read The House at Pooh Corner (Winnie the Pooh); I think it's even better!
This book would be ideal for someone with basic German who wants some reading practice, or a lovely book for children or adults who are fluent in that language.
