I would highly recommend this book to anybody asking the big questions of their identity and God's will for their life. Of course the Bible answers the big picture questions and God desires to speak to each of us personally but it is quite clear that many of us have misinterpreted what it says or what He speaks to us and are consequently in a state of confusion about who we are and what we should be doing. We wait for God to tell us exactly what to do and when to do it and if we're not sure we've heard anything or heard right, we don't do anything.
Patrick Dodson sets out to clear the confusion, to move away from a lazy interpretation of scripture which leads to lazy living, and help the reader towards the realisation that God has given us free will for a reason; He has given us everything we need but rarely tells us exactly what to do with it. We are made to be creative and God's intention is not to stifle our creativity but to let us get on with following His purposes as He has already explained to us in His Word.
The loving motivation of the author to write this book is clear but the approach is not softly-nicely. This is tough love and I can well understand his frustration and appreciate his honesty and the value of his wisdom gained over many years. At times for me though, what he readily admits as a "hippie-self-promoting-independent sounding approach" comes across as rather one-sided, particularly in his criticisms of the church and its leadership. Despite this, I finished the book more motivated and hopeful about playing my part in the call of God on my life, to understand and then get on with using my talents to love others as God has first loved me.
This book will at the very least challenge you and the conclusions you have drawn about yourself and God. It has the potential to break through any rigid thinking you may have and open your heart, mind and soul to the wonderful truth of how wonderfully you have been made and the marvellous possibilities before you. It may encourage you towards a life where you feel freed and empowered by God's grace to make choices bold in the knowledge that God will be there to make your path straight if you'll only set out on the journey.
Thank you Patrick Dodson!
