This fascinating and scientifically relevant book conveys the spirit of ISPS, providing an integration of different psychological interventions (cognitive, psychodynamic, family, group and social interventions), presented by expert clinicians and researchers from around the globe.
From the preface - "The purpose of this book is to describe and discuss a range of psychological therapies for people with psychotic disorders." , and "(...) play a part in promoting a better balance and integration between psychological and pharmacological treatments ...". The book starts with a good introduction from the editors (Martindale, Bateman, Crowe & Margison), that summarizes what to follow and present the "state of the art" in terms of psycho-social treatments.
The starting point is that research on Schizophrenia has been mostly concerned with the brain, resulting in important developments, but the same investment must be made in psychological research and this book is an effort in that direction.
The book is divided in 5 sections starting with 1) Cognitive Approaches, where you will find a model of CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) for Psychosis and a Compliance Therapy Model; 2) Family, Group and Psychosocial Approaches, with chapters on family intervention and psychoeducation, group therapy, relapse prevention intervention and residential care; 3) Individual Psychoanalytical Psychotherapy; 4) Early Interventions using Need-Adapted psychological treatment models, where you will find the very relevant work being done in Scandinavian countries (Sweden, Norway and Finland), integrating psychological (psychodynamic and systemic models) and biological interventions; 5) the last section called "An Australian Overview", presenting early psychosis intervention and psychotherapy.
