3.0 out of 5 stars Martin, Buskist, Carlson: Psychology, 24 Sep 2008
By Dr. R. Ralley - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Carlson et al. textbooks tended to be rather 'list-like' in structure. This is problematic as it is exactly list-like structure that we punish students for, when we mark their essays! Recent versions (e.g. this volume) contain useful extra features in the chapters (such as boxes with information about 'cutting edge' work, 'questions to think about', 'psychology in action' etc.) to supplement the chapters. I think Wayne Weiten (in his book Psychology Themes and VariationsPsychology: Themes and Variations (Ise))does a much better job of integrating these extras rather than having them more or less as suffixes, making the text interesting, and I very much prefer to read that book. However, bottom line is that Carlson and colleagues keep producing this series (good for my reading lists and student hand-me-downs)and the coverage is wide. We are up to 900 pp now... The one caveat is the tendency towards list-like quality as I said, which I think does leave this very much an 'indicative' textbook rather than one you'd want to keep forever.Psychology: With MyPsychLab v. 3 Pt. E
