5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent all rounder for students and tutors, 30 Jan 2006
This review is from: Psychology First (Paperback)
I am in full time employment and have recently become a student (again!) studying part time - GCSE psychology after toying with the notion for several years...in my first lesson my admirable tutor, who has been teaching psychology since 1979; recommended this book.
It is clear and easy to read for newcomers, no over powering indepth mindboggling text which you tend to find in psychology books when you are new to the subject and keen to get a foot on the ladder.
As with all books on this subject it includes numerous recommendations of other study matter.
The book is written to accompany the new OCR specification for GCSE psychology and as it states in it's preface it is 'clear and and interesting'.

There are six approaches in the OCR specification each share two chapters (12 in all) and the book also includes research methods and a 'how to' section for report writing for your coursework.
Included in the book are a wide variety of famous studies including the case of 'Little Albert, Freud, and Bandura's studies on aggression in children.
Chapters include Social (Influence), Behavioural (Phobias & Aggression), Developmental, Cognitive (Memory & Perception) and Bio -Psychology (Stress & Gender) to name a few.

It includes a glossary (which is very helpful if you are new to the terminology) and chapters include suggested 'group activities' which I have covered in my classes with fellow students.
The chapters end with 'what you need to know for the exam' and sample questions. The author, Barbara Woods is an experienced teacher of psychology at GSCE, A level and Access courses.
The book has 194 pages and is paperback (glossy).

I would say a worthy investment if you are interested/studying or teaching.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, 5 Feb 2009

(REAL NAME)
I purchased this book for my 14 year old daughter who is studying Psychology GCSE. This is the text book used at school and so we have found it helpful to have one at home to support her learning.
