I didn't use any such textbook last year when studying for my AS exam and unfortunately came out with an overall D (C in the first exam, E in the second). So this year for A Level I have really picked up my game and to help me out I started to borrow this book from the library and eventually decided it was easier to buy my own copy off Amazon.

Although we are given plenty of information in lessons in the form of handouts I am the sort of person who likes structure and I also like learning more information than I need to make sure I get the maximum mark for each question. Therefore, I found this book ideal in a way that it worked well along side the information I received off lecturers. For my January Module I used the book along side lessons and my grade shot up to an A. I did revise hard for the exam but I think the additional support from this textbook stood me in good stead and I have since been using it for the June Module (Unit 4 - Psychopathology, Psychology in Action and Research Methods). However, even with the help from the textbook I'm finding this topic a little daunting compared to January but I think that could just be me and I am still continuing to use it regardless.

The textbook itself is very well written out with an overload of information that you can just pick out snippets off and add to your own notes which I personally find helpful. If you aren't prepared to sit there and read something though, and prefer to just use your own information then I don't think this textbook would be useful to you as there is so much information to get through - you have to be patient and like to read.

You might also want to check what topics you are doing in A Level as well and see if you can find one with just the ones you are doing as this textbook contains them all and you do get a sense of being ripped-off when you have to miss out topics because your lecturers are not covering them. However, to those who are doing Psychology at Uni it might be helpful to have some basic information when going on to study further.

Overall, the textbook is brilliant and it deserves my recommendation because I really think that it is down to the extra research I did from this book that helped me improve my grades so much that I actually have a chance getting in to Uni come September.

Teacher's view 14 July 2009
Format:Paperback
Well-written text interspersed with just enough photos/pictures/diagrams to prevent boredom in those students who dislike pages of uninterrupted writing, but without looking a garish mess. Packed with interesting feature boxes such as "How Science Works", "Psychology in Context", "Issues,Debates and Approaches", wonderful visual summaries of material for revision and lots of student activities to get them thinking and for use in class discussions and practical lessons. The introductory section on Approaches, Issues and Debates is very comprehensive compared to other A2 texts currently available, but is essential for a high grade and easily understandable. No prizes for guessing which book I'll be using for teaching next term. This one really stands out from the others and has enough activity features within the text not to have to rely upon expensive web resources to make it more user-friendly.

very student friendly 12 Jan 2010
Format:Paperback
This is a very student friendly book, along with its AS counterpart. I am a psychology teacher and have recommended this book for students on their A2. It sets out the information clearly with good layout, student tasks, which help clarify and consolidate learning. As with all academic text books, it is not enough just to have one book, other texts must be incorporated into study to ensure a well rounded understanding of the subject, particularly now when synopticity is required in all of the A2 component of most of the UK exam boards. Primarily this book is aimed at people taking the AQA A A Level and in my view does a very good job as a base book for the classroom.
