Review

"Maroda’s proven skill at highly instructive use of courageous self-disclosure is superbly displayed in this revealing work on that rarest of topics: specific elucidation of technique in dynamic therapy. Full of practical advice and illuminating case material, this book is a godsend for therapists." - Thomas G. Gutheil, Department of Psychiatry, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Harvard Medical School, USA

"Maroda brings such a wealth of seasoned clinical experience and wisdom to this book that it inevitably will be an invaluable resource. She offers a treatment-oriented presentation that is sophisticated yet lucid and pragmatic." - Edgar A. Levenson, William Alanson White Institute, New York, New York

"Though intended primarily for inexperienced clinicians, this book has much to offer therapists at every level of practice. It is in equal turns scholarly and eminently practical, and imparts the clinical wisdom of a senior therapist who is willing to discuss the intricacies of clinical process with emotional and professional candor. The multidimensional clinical illustrations are evocative and elegantly crafted. Highly recommended." - Jerrold R. Brandell, Distinguished Professor, Wayne State University School of Social Work, USA; Editor-in-Chief, Psychoanalytic Social Work

"With this engaging, readable book, Maroda answers a longstanding need for a primer on psychodynamic technique. In her characteristic melding of professional and personal experience, theoretical sophistication, research findings, and plain-spoken common sense, Maroda serves up a banquet of good advice that will nourish not only students and beginning therapists, but also experienced practitioners. She keeps the focus on the practical and generously illustrates her points with clinical vignettes that exemplify the emotional honesty she so consistently recommends. I look forward to assigning this welcome text to my graduate students in clinical psychology." - Nancy McWilliams, Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, USA

"This is an outstanding contribution by a master clinician. Maroda takes the reader on an intimate tour of becoming a good psychotherapist. Her generous use of case examples allows the reader to enter into her consulting room, and illustrates the nuances of various dynamic methods. This book should be mandatory reading for graduate students facing the trepidation and uncertainty of immersing oneself in clinical practice." - Jon Mills, in private practice, Ajax, Ontario, Canada

"Maroda clearly describes how the psychotherapist's emotional responses to the patient's communications are essential to the change processes that lie at the core of the therapeutic relationship. Her clinical model for working more deeply in the affective realm is solidly grounded in interpersonal neurobiology. This extraordinary book is filled with practical information and rich case vignettes. I highly recommend it." - Allan N. Schore, Department of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences, University of California, Los Angeles, USA

Product Description

Helping therapists navigate the complexities of emotional interactions with clients, this book provides practical clinical guidelines. Master clinician Karen J. Maroda adds an important dimension to the psychodynamic literature by exploring the role of both clients’ and therapists’ emotional experiences in the process of therapy. Vivid case examples illustrate specific techniques for becoming more attuned to one’s own experience of a client; offering direct feedback and self-disclosure in the service of treatment goals; and managing intense feelings and conflict in the relationship. Maroda clearly distinguishes between therapeutic and nontherapeutic ways to work with emotion in this candid and instructive guide.

Karen Maroda's book on countertransference is one of my favourite books and I always recommend it highly to other psychologists and psychotherapists. This latest publication of Maroda's is another book worth having in your library - she writes with such honesty and insight. I still prefer her book on countertransference - maybe the freshness of her insights and the passion of her beliefs were stronger in that book - this book feels less raw and had less impact on me - but still well worth reading and returning to when mulling over how we work with our clients. Well worth buying.

This is a very interesting and readable book on what could have been a difficult subject. It is clearly written with many examples from her work. The main thrust of her argument for successful therapy is to concentrate on, and encourage the expression of emotion, and to be free enough to be responsibly spontaneous. There is a good chapter on the difficulty of treating borderline personality disorder. There is also a chapter on self-disclosure, which used to be a definate 'no' for psychodynamic work! You could actually sum the book up as a humane person-centred approach to psychodynamic work! It would give anyone, from student to practitioner, lots of ideas and stimulating challenges for their work. I highly recommend it.

Outstanding addition to my psychodynamic library 15 Jan 2010
By Teufelhunden - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
This book by Dr. Maroda should be mandatory reading for all psychiatry residents. Like Nancy McWilliams (whose books I'm a huge fan of), Dr. Maroda explains psychodynamic concepts in plain language. She tackles many issues that are unfortunately poorly taught (or dismissed entirely!) in training. For example, her Chapter on Self-Disclosure fills a large gap in a young therapist's training, as the topic tends to be the proverbial elephant in the room, with trainees and experienced therapists, alike, afraid to broach the topic out of fear of criticism. Much of what Dr. Maroda explains in this book are concepts that I've inherently understood (e.g. patients want their realities [perceptions of the therapist's affects] confirmed), but have never seen explained in writing. If I could only recommend 5 books for psychodynamic psychotherapy neophytes, this would be one of them, along with McWilliams' three books and Salman Akhtar's 'Broken Structures.'

Perfect balance between theory and practice 25 Jun 2010
By Zachary Taylor - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
I picked up this book with no prior exposure to Maroda's work and immediately read it from cover to cover. As a fairly new clinician I find most books on technique are either extremely cheesy and superficial or so mired in theory as to be impractical. I think the other reviewers have picked up on this too -- that Maroda's book here was the perfect balance for me....hooray!

Some key concepts I walked away with were learning to look at both sides of the therapeutic relationship and how the therapist brings in and works with his/her own stuff which is something I have tried to cultivate and this book took me to the next level with it. The chapter on Borderline Personality was by far my favorite.

On a theoretical level, Maroda's focus on emotions is a conversation that needs to continue. The moment-to-moment emotional interactions in therapy, I'm convinced, hold keys to doors that pure cognitive insight could only dream of opening.

The only book I would put on par with this one is a little known book by Dr. Eric Cowan called "Ariadne's Thread." It's also that wonderful refreshing balance between theory and narrative and practical application.

Sophisticated yet practical and easy to read 5 Jan 2010
By K. A. Jones - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is an excellent, readable resource for all types of mental health practioners. Maroda shares her wisdom from more than two decades of practice with memorable vignettes and accessible language. In a forthright manner she address difficult therapeutic issues such as erotic transference and countertransference as well as more mundane issues such as phone calls, email, gifts and fees. This is a wonderful resource for anyone who desires to be a competent, ethical and courageous healer of the psyche. The title should not put off theorists who are not psychodynamic theorists, although certainly they are her intended audience.
