Review

'Brilliant, enlightening, practical. A gem of a book.'

British Journal of Guidance and Counselling

'This is one of a very small number of books that manage to describe simply, but not simplistically, what analytic work involves.'

British Journal of Medical Psychology

'One of the most reliable (and readable) guides to what is involved in counselling… Jacobs' well-organised and comprehensive summaries of the main theories and his illustrations of psychodynamic counselling drawn from his own work will inspire students and trainees on counselling and therapy courses. They will also interest (and create envy) in more experienced readers.'

Professor Andrew Samuels, Centre for Psychoanalytic Studies, University of Essex

Product Description

Psychodynamic Counselling in Action is widely regarded as the most accessible introduction to the psychodynamic approach, making it ideal for readers who are new to the subject.

In this fourth edition of his bestselling book, Michael Jacobs describes the psychodynamic counselling process from initial meeting right through to the end of the relationship. He sets out the main theory and principles involved in psychodynamic work and - through two case studies - a man and a woman - shows how these can be applied creatively and effectively within the process.

In this new, updated edition, each chapter of the book now includes a set of thought-provoking training exercises, designed by Michael to help readers develop their psychodynamic counselling skills, to promote discussion of each stage of the counselling process, and to translate psychodynamic theory into practice.

Psychodynamic Counselling in Action has been instrumental in training many thousands of counsellors and continues to be the essential text for a wide range of courses.

This book, one of a series covering different types of counselling, is an excellent introduction to the processes involved in the psychodynamic method. Jacobs takes us from the initial meeting with a client through to the final session. The first encounter is crucial as clues may emerge that allow the counsellor to assess the suitability of the psychodynamic approach for a particular individual. He addresses the middle phase of counselling and takes an in-depth look at the relationship between the counsellor and the client. This is an extremely useful and accessible read in which the author clearly explains the counselling jargon such as 'resistance' and 'transference'. The book should enlighten anyone interested in psychodynamic counselling, whether as a practitioner or a prospective client.

Michael Jacobs writes fluidly and in an easy-to-read style. This book is essential for all individuals within the field of counselling, students and also for the interested lay-person. It provides a comprehensive overview of this unique style of counselling and provides plenty of detail and case examples to hold your attention throughout the book.

It deals in a practical way with each stage of the psychodynamic counselling process (beginnings, middles and endings) and other issues raised within this unique relationship (boundaries, defences, resistance & transference). A great addition to this well-respected series

I found this book to be a pretty good introduction to the ideas around psychodynamic counselling.

In general I thought that it was fairly easy to read and made more interesting by Micheal Jacobs using two real life case-studies throughout the book to explain different psychodynamic concepts.

Although I did find the section around defences and resistance a little hard going, and perhaps not as clearly explained as other parts of the book. I would still recommend this book for those who are interested in the ideas around psychodynamic counselling/therapy.
