The bestselling First Edition of Psychodynamic Counselling in Action has become widely regarded as the most accessible introduction to this complex subject and essential reading for trainees and practitioners working within different orientations who want to develop knowledge and skills in this area.

Revised and updated to take account of current practice, and now extensively referenced, the Second Edition describes the psychodynamic counselling process from the first meeting to termination. Michael Jacobs clearly sets out the main aspects of the approach and using two case studies - a man and a woman - he shows how these can be applied creatively and effectively within counselling practice.

More About the Author

Michael Jacobs was for many years Director of the counselling and psychotherapy courses in the Department of Adult Education, University of Leicester. In developing those courses he published a number of key texts which are used in other training courses - notably The Presenting Past (Open University Press, 2006, 3rd edition) and Psychodynamic Counselling in Action (Sage, 2010 4th edition). He has also written a number of other books (Sigmund Freud and D.W Winnicott in the Sage series) and edited three series for Open University Press - such as Core Concepts in Therapy. More recently he has written two books in the UKCP/Karnac series, Shakespeare on the Couch, and Our Desire of Unrest.

Nowadays Michael has a small private practice and has largely decided he has written enough!! He is however a visiting Professor at the University of Leeds and Bournemouth University, and he does a small amount of teaching, runs workshops, and works with a number of enterprises related to counselling and psychotherapy. He has also embarked on a Ph.D with the Open University researching psychoanalytic interpretations of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. But he also enjoys the more ordinary world of his home town of Swanage, Dorset, where he is Deputy Station Manager of the local Coastwatch station, and a trustee of a couple of charities, as well as company secretary of Swanage Pier. He teaches a course annually called Film on the Couch, which has a small dedicated following.

5.0 out of 5 stars A clear analysis of the psychodynamic method 18 Aug 2000
By A Customer
This book, one of a series covering different types of counselling, is an excellent introduction to the processes involved in the psychodynamic method. Jacobs takes us from the initial meeting with a client through to the final session. The first encounter is crucial as clues may emerge that allow the counsellor to assess the suitability of the psychodynamic approach for a particular individual. He addresses the middle phase of counselling and takes an in-depth look at the relationship between the counsellor and the client. This is an extremely useful and accessible read in which the author clearly explains the counselling jargon such as 'resistance' and 'transference'. The book should enlighten anyone interested in psychodynamic counselling, whether as a practitioner or a prospective client.

Michael Jacobs writes fluidly and in an easy-to-read style. This book is essential for all individuals within the field of counselling, students and also for the interested lay-person. It provides a comprehensive overview of this unique style of counselling and provides plenty of detail and case examples to hold your attention throughout the book.
It deals in a practical way with each stage of the psychodynamic counselling process (beginnings, middles and endings) and other issues raised within this unique relationship (boundaries, defences, resistance & transference). A great addition to this well-respected series

4.0 out of 5 stars Psychodynamic Counselling in Action 8 Dec 2009
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I found this book to be a pretty good introduction to the ideas around psychodynamic counselling.

In general I thought that it was fairly easy to read and made more interesting by Micheal Jacobs using two real life case-studies throughout the book to explain different psychodynamic concepts.

Although I did find the section around defences and resistance a little hard going, and perhaps not as clearly explained as other parts of the book. I would still recommend this book for those who are interested in the ideas around psychodynamic counselling/therapy.

5 stars!!!

Really worth spending the time reading this book which is friendly-reading, easy to understand and gives us lots of good insights on Psychodynamic Approach.
To be honest, the whole book is good, there isn't a single page of it we can say is boring or tiring. It is worth having the book on the self for future reference and re-reading.
The book is highly recommended to beginners or anyone who wants to get new insights in counselling.
