5.0 out of 5 stars Essential proto-punk 14 Oct 2000
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
If you think Punk started in London in 1977 or New York in 1975 or even Detroit in 1969, you had better take a listen to this. Punk started in the early sixties in America's Pacific Northwest. End of story. This disc contains the songs (along with the Kingsmen's "Louie Louie" - a track that is covered here, albeit with the wrong chords) that launched a thousand garage/punk bands. This is what you get when you put a bunch of spotty, angry, musically-challenged young men together in a dank cellar with some Danelectro guitars, Silvertone amps, a Farfisa organ and some crappy drums. It is, even almost 40 years later, truly magical. This is definitely music that parents don't want their kids to hear. Actually, come to think of it, maybe it's music that kids don't want their parents to hear. Do yourself a favour. Buy it now. Then buy a Kingsmen album, a Standells album, a Seeds album, a Troggs album, a Music Machine album and the Nuggets box set. You'll soon find yourself dressing in Sta Prest jeans and Ban Lon polo necks. Not to mention shiny black Cuban boots and Prince Valiant pudding-bowl haircut. By then, it'll be too late. You'll just have to accept the fact that you have become a Lo Fi loving Neanderthal like the rest of us...

5.0 out of 5 stars The Kings of Garage Punk. 29 Aug 2001
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
The roots of Punk. The first time I ever heard The Sonics I was blown away. I thought to myself, "This maniac rock 'n' roll is from the early sixties?!" A must have for any fan of good music. 29 tracks of pure mayhem including two versions (one live, one studio) of 'Psycho' and of course 'Louie Louie', which incidentaly was done first by Richard Berry, then by The Wailers, so NOT an original Kingsmen song as so many people think. If you like this kinda stuff then go buy some Wailers stuff too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Garage at its best 7 Jun 2005
Format:Audio CD
An awesome archive of proto-punk, and a must for any and every garage fan. Excellent sleeve notes (including comments from band members)accompany the essential Sonics tracks, along with rarer items, providing a history of one of the more influential pre-punk bands. I cannot recommend this album highly enough.
