Product Description

Review

"This is a textbook for undergraduates and an excellent one at that." Oxford Journals, June 2010

"The publication of Neel Burton′s excellent 2nd edition of Psychiatry is particularly opportune, coming as it does during what some have described as the specialty’s ‘recruitment crisis’. This undergraduate textbook is colourful, concise and engaging, the ideal primer to pique a student’s interest in mental health studies.

By turns intellectually challenging and entertaining (its first two quotations come from Nietzsche and Alice in Wonderland) the text is easily picked up and dipped into at random or studied more earnestly, chapter–by–chapter. Each section is introduced with a list of learning objectives and concluded with a summary of key facts. Its salient points are delivered alongside informative, appropriately selected case studies and consolidated with 12 pages of self–assessment of the widely used ‘Extended Matching’ (EMQ) variety." International Journal of Culture and Mental Health

International Journal of Psychiatry in Clinical Practice, 2007; 11(1): 79

Neel Burton is to be congratulated on producing such an excellent, enjoyable, and enlivening book. His considerable enthusiasm for the subject matter of psychiatry shines through the pages of this introductory textbook and should make it even more interesting for the target audience of medical undergraduates.

The book is both useful and enjoyable. The overall format, helpful illustrations and diagrams, and thought-provoking spiritual and philosophical quotations all combine to make it "a good read". I would have no hesitation in recommending it to medical students and even to junior psychiatric trainees. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

By G. Lee

I came across this book in the library and immediately took a liking to it. When I took it home I actually could not put it down, and ended up falling asleep over it. Not only is the book easy and, dare I say, fun to read, but the artistic and literary content gave me some incredible insights into mental illness. At the same time, the book covered all the aspects of the syllabus succinctly and effectively and I found it very useful both for learning from and for revision. Highly recommended.

Psychiatry 6 Jun 2006
Format:Paperback
Once you get past the author's style and flair (which may appeal to other readers), this new text is an excellent guide to the speciality, with detailed information about diseases and their impact on real patients. Cases bring the book to life, and summary boxes help to retain knowledge. Beautifully presented with full colour, it certainly looks attractive and makes reading enjoyable. Well worth looking at if you are in the market for a psychiatry book.

I bought Burton's Psychiatry just before starting a four month post in psychiatry to refresh my memory and make sure I was not completely unsafe on my first day on the wards. The textbook was not available when I did my psychiatry at medical school and is a very different beast from the textbooks that I used then.

The first thing to say is that the textbook fit the bill very nicely: it's very clear and very succinct and it's entirely possible to read it in just one weekend, which is just about all the time I had. Clinical skills such as asking about delusions and hallucinations or assessing suicidal risk are summarised in purple boxes and were particularly useful in my case.

Best of all though was the fact that the textbook is actually a pleasure to read. It's in full colour and heavily illustrated with art work, literary quotations, and case studies of people with mental disorders. All this makes the "bread and butter" of the book so much more immediate and relevant and also provides a welcome break from fact learning.

Basically, the textbook's clarity and practicality combined with its innovative and inspirational teaching style make it without a doubt the best medical (let alone psychiatry) textbook that I have read. I could not recommend it more.
