I first came across this band on one of the Nuggets compilations. With its strong verse-chorus structure and extended improvisational middle section, their track Tobacco Road was easily the best on the album. It marked Blues Magoos as very promising indeed. These two albums (collected together on one disk) certainly pay out on that promise. The second, Electric Comic Book, is one of the best garage psych albums I've heard; containing some extremely well penned tunes, complete with some of the most spacious instrumentation ever committed to tape. For me, Gloria is the best track. It's a whacked-out, trippy version of a Van Morrison song and it really rocks. Rush Hour is another highlight, but to be honest there's not a duff track on the whole album. The first album, psychedelic Lollipop, is almost as good, but without so many spacey bits. (We Ain't Got) Nothin' Yet and the afore-mentioned Tobacco Road are the stand outs. Two consistent psych classics for the price of one. Not bad at all!
