Product Description

Synopsis

This is a witty and iconoclastic commentary on magick and modern occult subculture by one of the founders of Chaos Magick. This book contains astonishing, controversial and revolutionary ideas on the theory and practice of magick, the structure of the universe and the nature of the mind. It holds many surprises as it challenges many of the conventional assumptions and paradigms of magick. Filled with practical techniques, the book will give you the means to undo the fallacy of 'being' and reach 'sideways' into imaginary time to accomplish magic(k). Done in the style of Aleister Crowley's "Book of Lies", and humorously illustrated, this book is a must for all Chaoist and Western magicians.

5.0 out of 5 stars Peter J Carrol (often quoted by Robert Aton Wilson) is the most important writer on magick since the infamous Aliester Crowley 27 Mar 2014
By SA - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Perfect Paperback
I wonder why this edition of the book (1999) is still in print, and the 2000 edition (perhaps overseas or hardcover, or collectable?) isnt. Seems backwards to me - the latest editions are usually in print when the older ones have gone out of print. I own this red covered '99 edition and am loving the advanced ideas promoted throughtout the book. Ive been into chaos magick, basically since I first found out about it - and bought a copy of Liber Null & Psychnaut (not too long after being introduced to sigilization by Disinformations compilation "Book of Lies" not to be confused with the Aliester Crowley classic "The Book of Lies."

I highly reccomend all of Peter J Carrol's (aka by his magickal name Stokastikos - often using that as a pen name for the magazine Chaos International) books (especially his more recent ones The Apophenion and The Octavo: A Sorceror-Scientist Grimoire. It shows that he wasn't just sitting back for all these years - the IOT retreated to do experiments with quantum physics and have come up with a whole new model of how they believe the universe works - and how we can use this better model, to understand how to use our magick more effaciously (as opposed to the more popular theories out there, he disagrees with the ideas of dark matter or anti-matter, for example) and not only presents his ideas eloquently in words - but in the back he has all the quantum mechanical operations/formulae to back up his theory. I knew he must've been doing something important in the years between publishing books, the end of the IOT, and when he started teaching at the, great-late, Robert Anton Wilson's - Maybe Logic Academy and his own website of a similar nature - Arcanorium College. Both of which Im highly interested in being an active participant in - at some point when I know I can dedicate my time to it, and not miss a single web-seminar or online class. I'm not actually sure if Maybe Logic Academy still exists, I really hope it does but according to my sources it was dwindling in 2012 and showed little to no activity at all in 2013 (so Im afraid Id pay for a years membership, only to get very little or worse yet - nothing from it - if someone could post a reply or review if you have any insider info on if the MLA still runs like it used to It would be much appreciated, I wish I had known about it a few years ago I would've been all over it - I know Phil H Farber (NLP), Peter J Carrol (Chaos Magick), Antero Alli (8 Circuit Model of Consciousness) and many more we're doing fantastic things - ensuring Uncle Bob's legacy lived on - Robert Anton Wilson - being easily one of the greatest thinkers of the last millennia IMHO.

Peter J Carrol is a chaote, an innovator in the occult world and now a rebel physicist - and I believe his ideas will be seen as far ahead of his time...I can't do his theories justice in words so I'll quote one of his websites Rebel Physics.

"Fifteen years ago I became convinced, from my researches in another field, that time must have a richer structure than that offered by the single dimension that we commonly ascribe to it.
Thus I went looking for evidence of multidimensional time concealed in the data of fundamental physics. I think that I may have found it.
I present my hypotheses in two major parts, HD8, (Hyperspin 8-Dimensional), shows evidence for multidimensional time in particle physics, and VHC, (the Vorticitating Hypersphere Cosmology hypothesis) shows evidence for multidimensional time in cosmology. .

In both of these hypotheses time has the same dimensionality of 3 as space, and spacetime has an overall small positive curvature to give an hyperspherical geometry and topology to a universe which remains finite but unbounded in both space and time. A single equation describes the vorticitation of the entire universe and all fundamental particles within it.

The overwhelming majority of alternative theories in physics attack only a limited number of the interpretations of observations that constitute the paradigm of the Standard Models of Cosmology and Particle Physics.
HD8 attempts to challenge the entire foundation of the Standard Models with a coherent alternative that remains unfalsified by experimental and observational data at the time of writing.

Whilst the hypothesis of 3 dimensional time remains unfalsified, I intend to devote my time to exploring its implications in parapsychology and starship design, neither of which have much of a chance within the standard models.

This site also contains various papers on matters of philosophy, magic, politics, ecology and technology.

Peter J Carroll. Winter 2008/9.
Chancellor of Arcanorium College
Past Grandmaster IOT Pact. (Retired)." - quote from RebelPhysics.com

He's gone on in The Apophenion and The Octavo to even do even more research into this new hypothesis of HD-8 and the the Vorticitating Hypersphere Cosmology hypothesis further refining his hypotheses, which are sound in my humble opinion. To think that we understand the universe implicitly at such an early stage of research (yes, there have been years of research into string theory/m-theory and quantum mechanics, but these are just the tip of the iceberg as far as Im concerned) it would be conceited to believe we have all the answers, especially when the Three Dimensional Space Time Model of the Universe doesn't fit, across the board, or to be redundant and blunt - universally. I would like to see a well known proponent of the currently accepted model of physics - go over his hypotheses and formulae found in The Apophenion and The Octavo - and try to prove or disprove his theories based on their own knowledge. Because as he said as of 2008/9 - his theory (as well as the accepted theory of 3-D Space Time) have both yet to be invalidated.

I just wonder if the top physics have the brass balls to give it a go haha ;-) and try to think outside the box (people resist change, most of the time, especially such radical changes as how we view our whole universe or our own ways of thought and societal laws, morals, taboos, etc. - Changing our understanding fundamentally of the workings/structure of our universe (if it is infact a "Uni-Verse" not many parallel universes in a bigger multiverse) and how this would alter human consciousness as well as what we can do with our consciousness given a better more solid understanding of the workings of this space-we inhabit.

For a long time now science has just been proving what magickians have known implicitly to be true, with experiments - resulting in theories that become known as "facts" when really - theories are meant to be either disproved and/or improved upon - or replaced by more advanced theories that seem to fit better as intelligence is increasing exponentially (as evidenced by Robert Anton Wilsons - Jumping Jesus Phenomenon).

Anyway - the reason I typed this up was basically to look for information about MLA - show my appreciation for what Peter J Carrol is doing (finally equating magick and science - which have always been the same - only science is finicky and demands qualtative and quantative proof, in experiments time and time again before something will be accepted. The best example of how Magick is a Science is blantantly obvious - in Alchemy becoming Chemistry - back in the 1800's being a chemist meant you we're a sorcerer or mage/alchemist - now I feel most chemists would scoff at the idea that chemistry is magick, and that magick is a form of scientific study (Alchemy/Chemistry -is divine act iin of itself, chemists get to feel that divine act of "Creation" of new molecules/chemicals - and for us to get to this point - would've been impossible without the alchemists who literally broke down our world into its elemental qualities ("first matter") so we could build new human-made creations from the building blocks of our very world/universe).

My last, and most important question is - where can I find a copy of Peter J Carrol's - The Psychonomicon? Has it long been out of print, and no one bothered to press up a new edition? His entire bibliography can be bought on amazon - even the out of print editions (but pricey) - but there isn't even one used, new, collectable or even an amazon page at all for "The Psychonomicon" - as a huge fan of all his literature I want to complete my collection. I was at one point under the impression Psychonomicon had its title changed (and was Advanced Ideas in Chaos Magick) but as evidenced by the back his most recent book "The Octavo" - its listed along with "Psyber Magick", and the rest of his bibliography. Is it available anywhere?Ar Are there any plans to put it back into print now that he's come out of seculsion (so to speak) and is finally writting new occult non-fiction? Or is there another website where it is available - and amazon is just missing it?

Any information on how to obtain a (preferably new or used-like new copy) of The Psychonomicon it would be much appreciated, as would any information surrounding whether or not Maybe Logic Academy still functions - and is worth persuing given the limited activity these days (are there any plans to revamp or restart the acadmey - it was really ahead of its time - taking the idea of old occult lodges and applying it to the digital world - where anyone could participate in discussions and chats/seminars online simulcast - is genius and the coolest way you could learn and stay up to date on the latest occult happenings - in these days when the lodges are all really, really tiny (I went to a local OTO branch in Salem, MA (and we're talking halloween/witch hysteria-tourism and occult central here - if you're ever in the area Nu Aeon is by far the best and most legitamet occult shop, down on the wharf - ran by The Temple of Nine Wells (a wiccan temple) and their high preistess Gypsy (RIP Richard - I'm glad your awesome idea for the Cosmic Connection was realized before your passing, it truly is a sight to behold) but back to the Salem OTO branch, I was very disappointed (no offence, Im glad it exists still for sure) but not only was the membership small - you could only attain the first three degrees/minerval degrees - making you an official OTO member - then you'd have to travel all over the country/world to learn more and get higher in the ranks. I mean when I went they couldn't even gather enough local-people to preform their annual public ritual of the Gnostic Mass - I would've thought out of all the lodges in the country that the Salem branch would've had an extensive large membership and be able to teach you alot - and only the head guy was a true thelemite - the rest of the people were kabbalists or simply into one small aspect of occultism - it just was NOT what I had imagined my whole life, an occultists mecca with a wealth of information and teachers/mentors. I once had aspirations of joining the A.'.A.'. but if you can't even get past the minerval degrees without moving all over the country (I wish I had that luxury) the chances of getting into the A.'.A.'. for me are slim to none (if the body even still exists as it used to) - and what does that say about the occult lodges, the Golden Dawn and Rosicrucians meet at peoples houses - don't even have independent lodges. I think this is a really sad thing - I was hoping to join a group where I could meet and discuss with other occultists from all walks of life and take part in all the intiations and rituals. But it seems self-initation (or online courses like RAW's Maybe Logic Academy and Peter J Carrol's Arcanium College - which IMO is the future - occult digital lodges - Infact im surprised the OTO, Golden Dawn, Rosicrucians and other societies haven't jumped on that band wagon yet. You could get alot more practioners that way - and through the digital courses - expand actual lodge memberships and maybe bring it back to how they were in their heigh day.

2.0 out of 5 stars A little too much psyber, not enough fiber... 7 Nov 2012
By Allan Sherwood - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
Well, what can I say?

I do not wish to offend endeared fans of Carroll. I liked Kaos and Null.

This book seems to read as if The Author wrote it in Theta Trance, possibly while slightly intoxicated by a Substance.

That's not to say his writings aren't coherent.

They just happen to not relate to anyone outside the HOGD.

While reading, I felt like I was 15, listening to adults talk about politics, sexuality, physics, and whatnot--familiar subjects, but I didn't have depth of conceptual or experiential understanding to make the writer-reader conversation worthwhile to me.

This is unfortunate. I really thought I was going to be in for a treat.

Well. Maybe you "just had to be there" to appreciate this conversation.

Worth a read, if you ever want practice at experiencing the sensation of being out of your Clearance Rank.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's a Heptapus! 2 Aug 2011

This book was like mental breakfast for me; most important meal of the day! Wake up, get coffee, read some of Peter J. Carroll's brilliant mind babies, and go about my day vibrant with Chaotic zeal and curiostiy. I love the Liber 333 throwback, it felt good to have a Crowley twinge on a Chaoist's thoughts.

5.0 out of 5 stars magick in the six dimensions 24 Feb 2010

we admit that at first...
dear magi,
... when the book arrived from Amazon and we flipped the pages, we felt disappointed. It seemed such a meager volume. But then we read it, and it delighted us. While we don't agree with everything the author writes, particularly his disparaging views of Astrology and dogs, nor do we understand everything he suggests, especially his theories about physics; this book vibrates with witty and irreverent ideas, and we so much prefer a slim volume like this that has an original and creative view of magick to so many fat tomes that masquerade as wisdom but conceal a mere rehash of the previously published.
And all this without using are, is, was or be. Quite a challenge.
kyela,
