"Stop Talking" may begin as trip-hop, and samples may flit in and out throughout the album, but the band stay absolutely true to Roxette's dictum "Don't bore us, get to the chorus". JS Clayden has explained that his lyrics were informed by his father's heart surgery, and an incident when his girlfriend, given only 8 hours to live, was saved by surgery, too. This adds a sense of defiance--"If you shut us down/We'll just get up again" from "Shutdown" being just one of myriad examples--that serves to draw Pitchshifter even closer to the nu-metal crowd. Did the world catch up with Pitchshifter, or did they step back to meet it? A bit of both, really. Whatever, PSI could easily sell millions. --Dominic Wills

Better than Deviant?,
By A Customer
This review is from: Psi (Audio CD)
The new album from one of the best industrial bands around. PSI builds on the success pitchshifter have already had with there previous albums. With a different sound to their last success "Deviant", it proves to pay off. The new tracks are mainly very good, even though perhaps a little repetitive.I have however only rated this album with a 4, rather than 5, due to the fact that it does not compare to their previous album "Deviant". The songs do not have the catchy rhythms and lyrics that Deviant was scattered with, which really lets the album down. However songs such as "Down", "Shutdown", "We Know" and "Eight Days", are excellent. Much of the album is different so it doesnt flow as well as their previous attempts, which is good in some ways. A remix of the song "Clean" from deviant is a nice addition to a very varying tracklist. This album is good to listen to when you are looking for something different, something perhaps a mix between Nine Inch Nails's "Broken" EP and lyrics getting very close to marilyn manson in places. JS Clayden does however manage to make the style so different, it is very difficult to categorise. This change has yet again proved that pitchshifter can stay on top no matter what they do. This goes in with the rest of their collection as a success and a well written piece of material. A must buy for those of you that enjoy riffs and industrial style rock.

Lean and mean,

Throughout the course of producing their albums, Pitchshifter have put some considerable effort into fine-tuning an extremely individual sound. The band are clearly very capable musicians because, as well as using deft lyrics to drive home a point about the way we live, the tunes, grooves and break-beats are just stunningly cool. I feel like the filler tracks of previous work have been dumped, and the whole thing pared down to a sleek, competent, and still highly original recording. It's a classy piece of work - still crunchingly loud (Stop Talking So Loud), still clever (Super Clean), still politically aware (Whatever), but stripped down so that there's no waste. On the website, Jon Clayden says that he feels this album is his favourite of those produced by Pitchshifter, because there are "no moments on the album that I don't like..." I would definitely agree.
