I write as a scholar from an English department trying to come to terms with Plautus's immense influence on Renaissance comedy. Willcock's introduction and notes, while ideal for any student of Latin literature, assimilate scholarship on the play through the mid-1980s with a judiciousness valuable to someone like me. He has some original ideas about the text (e.g., the last scene). His critical insights display an informed feeling for and love of Plautus and comedy, as when he declares Ballio the pimp's code of conduct ("ubi data occasiost, rape clepe tene harpaga bibe es fuge") a "purely Plautine" line. He's very good at noting and sometimes admitting as inexplicable some of the playwright's plot lapses. There is a lengthy appendix on prosody and scansion, and the introduction nicely situates the play within the context of ancient comedy and Plautus's age. Also helpful is a section on characteristic figures of language and thought and another on transmission of Plautus's text. This is an ideal play for those who want to read Plautus's best play in the most useful of student editions. RF Hardin

Superb! 26 Sep 2007
By Patricia E. Wehner - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
So much just does not translate well into English. Reading this text in the original Latin (and occasionally Greek!) made this already-wonderful work even more enjoyable for me. I highly recommend picking this up if you're studying Plautus- even if you're a hack at Latin, you can follow along well enough with the English, and there are just layers upon layers of beautiful and hysterically funny new things to discover in the original.
