Biography

Mighty Swedish epic doom legends CANDLEMASS are back!!! And they sure didn`t come empty-handed: "Ashes to Ashes" is a massive live onslaught on DVD that boasts two full shows (one at Sweden Rock festival 2009, the other one in Athens the same year) – plus the Sweden Rock show on CD too. Not to mention an in-depth band interview and plenty of bonus stuff!

Prior to this offering I had only heard early Candlemass albums, Nightfall etc with Messiah on vocals. For me, his voice is what gave Candlemass their distinctive sound as opposed to just being another Black Sabbath clone.
So I was a bit tentative about purchasing this one with a different vocalist. I needn't be. Rob Lowe puts in a fine vocal performance. As always the Black Sabbath sounds and doom laden riffs are there, but that is fine by me.
Rob Lowe sounds like a traditional Heavy Metal singer, and wouldn't be out of place in albums by Rainbow, Dio etc. I was surprised to read though that he'd been sacked soon after the recording of this album due to poor live performances.
Mr Edling though has not been adverse to changing singers over the years so it seems.
The final track 'Black as Time' caught me by surprise a bit, with its narrative intro, which for a moment had me thinking it was a cover of the Hawkwind track 'Standing at the Edge'!

In all a great Heavy Metal album, worthy of a good blasting on the speakers (when the wife is out).

Just wish Messiah would return on vocals for at least one more album.

More of Robert Lowe singing Leif's fantasy obsessed lyrics with a strong voice, nothing new on this CD. No-one has replaced Messiah for power and emotion, he is the definitive Candlemass voice. The albums since Messiah's departure with Tomas Vikstrom (a bad pub singer), Bjorn Flodkvist (so-so sort of replacement), Robert Lowe (powerful but looks like Bill Bailey), and now Mats Leven (Robert's replacement - as yet unproven, but sings backing vocals on this album), are for completists only. The songs are all of a similar style and the lyrics all Dio-esque fantasy rubbish. The first 5 Candlemass CDs are essential listening (even the first with Johan singing) but the formula is getting tired and a new songwriting partner for Leif as well as vocalist is needed (or get Messiah back for a second reunion!)

Because I have only got to know the more recent work of Candlemass I feel I can look objectively on this rather than compare it to their "classic" work. What I hear on this album I like. The typical crushing rhythms, bass attack and great, almost hypnotic guitar riffs. There are also some superb keyboard Hammond organ type breaks during the album that give it an almost prog rock feel.
When I look through the track list it is hard to focus on one song and that speaks for the quality running through this album, but if pushed, the title track and Siren Song are ones I would list as favourites but that would be doing a disservice to the rest of the album.
I have no hesitation in giving this the full 5 stars.

I've liked every Candlemass release since Rob joined. I admit, I only really started checking them out because of that very reason due to my enjoyment of Solitude Aeturnus albums. This one, like Grey Islands and Death Magic Doom, did not disappoint. The title track in particular has to be a moment of genius. Black As Time lyrics are just pure doom. Makes you think about your life coming to its inevitable demise. Anyhow, I've rambled on quite enough. If you enjoy heavy doom with clean vox (in my opinion, one of the best vocalists in metal) then what ya waiting for? Buy it! This or Kreator's 'Phantom Antichrist' album of 2012 IMO.

Enjoy. I know I certainly have.

Not revolutionary, if you know Candlemass then you've got a fair idea what this will sound like. If you like Candlemass then you'll like this.
