For quite a while now I've been thinking that I'd love a 'stand-alone' copy of the Psalms. If you're happy with the ESV (I am), then it's hard to imagine one more perfect than this.

It has red ink for the titles and verse numbers, a large and clear black for the Psalms, and lots of white space allowing each psalm room to 'breath' on the page, and greatly aiding the readability.

I also love it that each psalm starts on a new page.

As a book, it's neither too rigid nor too 'floppy' It will lie flat (enough) on a desk or lectern. The leather is appealing both to the touch, the sight, and the smell! Mine now lives beside my bed so I can start and end the day with a Psalm or two.

I honestly can't imagine anyone buying this and being disappointed. It's lovely. Highly recommended.

In recent years there hasn't been many Publishers publishing Psalters which I think is a real shame, so when I heard the ESV were doing one I was quite excited and naturally ordered one.

I have to say I think the ESV have done an amazing job with this publication of the Psalms.

The Tru Tone binding is very well made and looks great. Also comes in a smart looking presentation box.

They have used quite thick high quality paper so you don't get excessive bleed through.

The type face is very clear and easy to read and is also laid out in a single column format.

This edition of the Psalms would be great for devotional use and also for use in public Worship.

I am sure this publication of the Psalms will be used by many as the read and explore this wonderful portion of God's word.

Just fantastic. 20 Jun. 2014
By Rico Lebrun - Published on Amazon.com

What is currently listed as the paperback version is actually the premium leather version, as the price should be an indication. I own numerous Allan bibles and a couple of custom handcrafted bibles. I have a pretty good feel for what a quality bible is like. This Psalms is excellent. The leather cover has the look and feel of a good goatskin, whatever it is. The liner has the look and feel of a nice soft leather, both together resulting in a very supple cover. Well done. I really like that the pages are a more substantial type of paper which results in a thicker book, which is just fine by me. I am so impressed by Crossway. Of all the bible manufacturers they seem to be really listening to what we the customers want. Quality first and foremost. Finally, let me just say that this is a beautifully designed layout.

Well done Crossway. I am impressed!

A very readable print and a companion size volume 29 Jun. 2014
By Innocent Bystander - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Leather Bound Verified Purchase
For many years now, I've been journeying thru
the Psalms as a sustained Lectio Divina. THIS
volume with its single column format, generous
type-face with lots of white space and a soft
binding that lets the volume lay flat... is free of the
distractions that too often lead to fatigue of aging
eyes and clumsy hands.

Easy to turn pages, makes it a wonderful companion
for reading that has frequent reference to Psalms.
It is also life size... that is comfortable to move around
with in hand, hoodie pouch, purse or pocket.

As for the translation... ahhh, again having many
translations of the Psalms for the the nuances of God's Word
that each one reveals... this one is companionable.
That means The Psalms echo in the living experience of
God's presence with us among the poor, the not wanted,
the marginalized...those who show us the Face of Christ
among the poor in spirit... The Anawim... and my own brokenness.

If you find yourself waiting in a Veterans Hospital, or
an emergency room, or perhaps a bus stop on the
sad side of town... you will understand "companionable".

All's great except the cover. 10 July 2014
By Chris D. Dunaway - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Leather Bound Verified Purchase
I got this after I saw the good reviews on Amazon, and especially at bibledesignblog.com. Fits comfortably in my hands (I'm a 5'11 man), well bound, the line matching is unnecessary because of the opaque paper, and nevertheless the line matching is perfect. Because of the thicker paper it doesn't lie totally flat, but after five minutes of slowly and carefully working the binding, it'll lay open at Psalms 1 and 150.

My copy has a crumpled corner on the clamshell case, which doesn't affect the Bible itself, but the back cover has what look like fingernail scratches on the outside. The inside edges of the leather cover are not cut particularly straight. They're glued down ok, though edge stitching may help.

The text block, which is printed in China (!) is excellent, the binding seems great, and the leather cover, while silky to the touch, lacks somewhat in craftsmanship. If Crossway could address those errors, this would be an easy five-star Bible!

Great Psalm book, with one reservation 25 Jun. 2014

It was tough to not give this a 5 star rating, but in the end I decided to go with 4 stars.

Overall it is great. The binding is sewn, the cover (mine is trutone) is supple and very leatherlike, without the smell of some faux leather covers. The pages are regular paper so the book is a bit thicker than it could be, but there is no annoying bleed through like most Bibles, which I love. It is a great size, and weight for holding comfortably. And the type size is large enough for older eyes.

Now the only negative, but it is an annoying one. The typesetting. It took me awhile to figure out why some of the verses were indented so weirdly, but I finally got it. The first line of each phrase is justified to the left, the next phrase is indented in one tab. This is fine, since it helps to differentiate phrases. But there are also words that are indented in even further. I finally figured out that they indented twice for any partial phrase that didn't fit on a single line. Although I can see their logic, it does make for a lot of visual bouncing back and forth that I find a bit annoying (and tiring). Especially since the partial phrases are often only one or two words. It is hard for me to keep my place when I have to bounce to the middle of the text to read a single word, then bounce all the way to the left for the next line. You can see examples of this in the preview (Psalm 8:3-4 and Psalm 5:10-11 are a couple, there are many more). Perhaps this won't bother you, but it does me.

A wish come true! 19 Oct. 2014
By G. Newman - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Imitation Leather Verified Purchase
This book of Psalms is a wish come true. Years ago Barnes & Noble made a similar book of psalms in the KJV. I always hoped another publisher would put out one like it in a different translation. Crossway indeed did so. And this book is done so very well, befitting the majesty of the psalms. It is straight text, no footnotes or other "helps" cluttering the text. Even the verse numbers are offset in smaller print in the margin, so they're less noticeable. The "selah"s as well are offset in the right margin, and less noticeable. Each psalm begins on a new page. The text is well-spaced, making it a comfortable and relaxing read. The size is just right in the hand, about the size of a paperback book, but much higher in quality. The cover and binding are very durable. To me, this is a perfect book for one who enjoys reading the Psalms regularly. I recall hearing that Billy Graham read through the Psalms every month, five per day. This edition would help make that a pleasurable practice.
