Nobody quite evokes the atmosphere of Mediaeval England quite as well as Ian Morson in this series of books. In this installment Falconer leaves Oxford to examine some books at a Cumbrain abbey. He is soon enveloped by a tale of disappearing books and murder. Whilst this story lacks a little of the colour of the previous adventures of the Oxford University tutor it is entertaining enough and Falconer himself is an engaging central character. It's a pity that this series seems to have ground to something of a halt.

The discovery of a skeleton from the sands outside a monestery and Falconer's investigation forms the basic plot. But the story never inspires the imagination and the characters never come alive. It is very hard to care who killed the monk or why.

A Psalm For Falconer 17 Aug 2000
By tregatt - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
This is one of the best in the series! Access to some rare texts of Aristotle tempts Master William Falconer away from the petty intrigues of Oxford to Furness Abbey, near the shifting sands of Lancaster Bay. As usual, Falconer stumbles onto a twenty year old mystery that, to his dismay takes up his time that he feels could be more usefully spent reading Aristotle.

I enjoy mysteries that allow the reader to appreciate the history and culture of the times; and this mystery is rich in both. The mystery is intriguing and the description of the treacherous shifting sands and the remote abbey adds to the fearful atmosphere. A truly enjoyable read.
