Pruning and training are the gardener's main ways of asserting control over plants, but many gardeners find them difficult to master. Here is the first full-length, fully illustrated book to deal exhaustively with both these important gardening techniques, as well as related techniques such as topiary.

Pruning and Training Plants uses specially commissioned colour photographs alongside approximately 300 step-by-step two-colour diagrams, covering all the important procedures. These show what the plant should look like before, during or after treatment; while the diagrams take you through an easy-to-follow agenda of precisely what to do when. Superb colour photographs are also used generously to show specimens that have been pruned or otherwise manipulated to look their best at all seasons of the year.

All the popular plants suitable for pruning or training (including greenhouse plants) are covered in an authoritative text that reflects the accumulated wisdom of some of the finest gardeners. Many of the practices covered are centuries old, others are relatively new. Extensive treatment is given to deciduous and evergreen trees and shrubs, hedging plants, topiary, climbers, roses of all kinds, tree fruits, soft fruits, and vines. An A-Z Directory of Trees, Shrubs and Climbers provides quick-reference practical advice, fully cross-referenced to detailed instructions elsewhere in the book. Also included are a glossary of technical terms and a comprehensive index.

Pruning and Training Plants is an important and much-needed contribution to gardening literature appealing to all levels of expertise from the novice to the expert.

Pruning and training review 29 July 2002

Format: Paperback
A great book for both the experienced and novice gardener. Informative pictures, clear, concise and easy to follow.
However as many of us gardeners know the only way to prune is to get out there and do it! Mistakes will be made but hopefully not as many with this guide.
