5.0 out of 5 stars A very emotional and touching movie, 18 Oct 2007
By P. DATTA "Pritthijit Datta" (Stockton on Tees, Teesside) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Provoked is a very emotional and touching movie. The story is about how one woman faced overwhemling odds against her, in favour of freedom from jail due to case of continued and rentless abuse from an evil and bullying husband. She understandbly placed the law in her own hands and paid the heavy price. Her case attracted huge publicity via woman rights campaign groups in a successful attempt for a retrial at the high court. The first trial overlooked certain facts, which I will not go in details as the movie will reveal it all.

The issue of domestic violence from abusive hubands is well documented in the movie. The legal formalites are a little complex to grasp, but had a significant bearing on the jurdical aspect of the UK legal system. Her case touched millions of heart and gained sympathy even from prison inmates. That is the general gist of the story.

Aishwarya Rai maybe criticised a little unfairly for her acting, but she provides a solid performance as this couragable lady who maintained great dignity. The story is true and is well delivered for dealing with a high compex legal case. I felt like crying in certain phases of the movie. If you want to watch a movie that is touching and dramatic, watch Provoked. I do not want give any unnecessary criticism to the movie. It deserves praise for recreating the events of this real life story into a feature length movie. The events contribued to a legal victory, which appear to be remotely not possible. Fascinating movie to watch for the subject it tackled well.

5.0 out of 5 stars brilliant , 20 Nov 2007

i am currently studying about the difference manslaughter and murder at my college course. i am studying paralegal course and i am hoping to become a lawyer. the teacher bought this film to one of our classes and it was an amazing film. it showed the difficulties in proving provocation and diminished responsibility and also introduced battered womens syndrome to the courts in the UK.

brilliant film and i will recommend it to anyone who is studying law and also people who love true stories as this is a true story.

2.0 out of 5 stars A so-so kind of film, 11 Aug 2007
By Dichon "Bollywood Addict" (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This film is based on a true story and that, is its only real redeeming feature. Basically this is not a very good a film. The story line is powerful- a young Indian woman is married off to someone who no one knows much about. It seems that the people arranging the marriage are blinded by the fact that he is an NRI (non resident Indian) and seem to think that equates to decency. Anyway, he seriously abuses his wife when they return to live in the Uk. After 10years, she has had enough. She kills him. She is sent to prison for life but her case is appealed (with help from her fellow inmates) and she is freed.

The bridegroom is played very well by Naveen Andrews. His bride is played by Aishwarya Rai whose acting I find to be rather hit and miss in most of her films. In this film, I'm afraid it's a miss. She doesn't quite become the character; she is always acting (sometimes, over acting)and this can prove to be a bit of an irritation when watching the film. And she isn't the only one whose acting is a bit amateur in this film either. What a disappointment.

The film tries to compensate for it's weak actors and script (even though it's a true story, this is a badly written script) by going for your emotions. This only leads to it being embarrasing a times.

I wont be watching this film again.

4.0 out of 5 stars Aishwarya is very good
The film could have been better--it plays very much like a tv movie but it's helped tremendously by a very moving and sensitive performance by Aishwarya Rai.
