5.0 out of 5 stars Undiscovered gem - excellent performances 29 July 2014
Format:DVD
I bought this film thinking it was some bad b film. How wrong I was.
The box does this film no justice. I have the Boulevard version.
You have to hand it to them, the transfer is excellent - really nice and sharp and the colours are good, no glitches. Boulevard do make an effort with their dvds.
The performance by David Morse in Prototype is outstanding. At no stage do you NOT think he is an android. All his actions are very realistic.
Some of his story is quiet touching, his innocence, meeting the girl at the bookshop, the use of him by the army and the ending.
Michael's relationship with Dr Carl is portrayed realistically although I found Plummer a bit overly cantankerous but even the way he walked was how you would expect a man of Dr Carl's age to.

Forget bad reviews on this, it is a very nice film, well acted by all and Morse should have gotten an Oscar for his brilliant portrayal of Michael.

A film I never even heard of until seeing it recently I would highly recommend this film. Top marks from me!

3.0 out of 5 stars There is DVD of the 1992 version 11 July 2013
Format:DVD
This message is special for the reviewer (The Old SCI-FLYER) who wants to buy the DVD of the 1992 version.
Although it is very low budget B-movie and the rating in IMDB us rather low (rather strange and extreme, from 332 the ratings 78 votes for 10 points and 84 votes for 1 point), the video/DVD of this 1992 version is someway somehow indeed rather rare and hard to find.
However there is DVD of it. It had been released by a small studio in Belgium many years ago. It was not widely distributed, and one hardly could find or notice it in street shops or online shops, actually not much people knew about it. It had been out of print for many years already. Yesterday I have accidentally found two exemplars of it in a small shop here in the Netherland, one in factory sealed condition and one is unsealed. I have bought the sealed one with old stock clearance price in Euro 1.50 only.
If one wants to buy the DVD of this version, one can try to surf/search in "google nl" and see whether one can find a used one from second hand shops.
About the quality of the DVD? I have no idea, still got no time to watch it. It was released by a small studio, one should not take high expectation. Please ignor the number of my rating stars too, it is just for set this review.
Hope this information helps!

3.0 out of 5 stars prototype 20 Jan 2013
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
This is a fair movie at best, with a poor but thoughtful ending, its an old 70's type of film on low budget and some poor acting, I'm a big fan of David Morse, so I'm very happy with it. Give this film a miss unless your a fan of Plummer or Morse,I only wrote this review because the existing one was so bad and misleading, I hope it was helpful.

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT FILM ,WRONG DETAILS. 7 Mar 2010
Format:VHS Tape
I ACQUIRED THIS FILM MANY YEARS AGO , IN THE DAYS WHEN V H S WAS ALL THE RAGE ALSO I ACQUIRED THE EARLIER VERSION WITH CHRISTOPHER PLUMMER ISSUED IN 1983 .
THIS LATER VERSION FEATURING LANE LENHART, ROBERT TOSSBERG BRENDA SWANSON , PAUL COULJ, MICHEL COX, AND INTRODUCING SEBASTIAN SCANDIUZZI,THIS WAS THE CORRECT LIST OF ACTORS FOR THE 1992 VERSION THAT I AM STILL WAITING FOR TO COME OUT ON DVD . IF THERE IS ANY ONE OUT THERE THAT KNOWS OF A VERSION OUT PLEASE CONTACT.ITS NOT OFTEN THAT THE WRONG INFORMATION IS SHOWN ON THE AMAZON SITE ,BUT ITS HAPPENED THIS TIME AND I AM HAPPY TO CORRECT IT FOR OTHER BUYERS. ALTHOUGH THE PLOT IS ALMOST THE SAME ITS A WORTHY ADDITION TO ONES COLLECTION.I HOPE THAT AMAZON WILL ADJUST THE CREDITS TO THE CORRECT ACTORS AS MR PLUMMER ONLY WATCHED THIS VERSION (POSSIBLY) AND NOT ACTED IN IT
I HOPE THIS INFORMATION IS HELPFUL AND WILL HELP OUT FUTURE BUYERS.
THE OLD SCI-FLYER.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent low-budget drama 5 Sep 2005
By Chris Chris Chris - Published on Amazon.com

This is sci-fi, but don't expect a high tech thriller -- it's a well-written, well-acted, well-directed drama. The pace is on the slow side, but if you're in a laid-back mood, it's a nice little movie to kill an hour and a half with.

5.0 out of 5 stars This Is A Great Movie 18 May 2004
By Christopher Amodeo - Published on Amazon.com
Format:DVD
I wrote a review for the V.H.S. edition of this film, a few years ago, but it is gone now, because it is no longer available on V.H.S. and Amazon has completely removed it from their database. I saw this movie when it came out 25 years ago (1983). I've always liked it a lot. The scientist that created the android, gets very attached to it throughout this movie, because he and his wife were never able to have children of their own, so the human looking android is like a "son" figure for the scientist. I like that aspect of this film. The ending is sad, but Michael (the android), did the right thing. The government would have used him for the wrong reasons. Watch this movie and I think that you will like it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great movie 22 Sep 2007
By Jd Wood - Published on Amazon.com
Format:DVD
Prototype is a great movie, despite the lack of (or the need for) the typical sci-fi special effects we've come to expect. The story line is solid and meaningful.

The DVD cover-art is a little misleading in the sense that it brings to mind such epic movies like "Terminator" - it's a marketing gimmick (IMO) that works - it's what got me to pick up the movie in the first place.

1.0 out of 5 stars Terrible 11 Oct 2012
By Miles - Published on Amazon.com

I like that type of movie, T2 was my favorite movie of all time, but this was horrible. I am a fan of both Christopher Plummer and David Morse, so I'm surprised it was that bad. Send me a dollar for postage and you can have mine.
5.0 out of 5 stars Prototype 26 Dec 2011

This is a well written and acted movie. The cast was well chosen and showed a good grasp of the subject matter. It was just a very enjoyable movie.
