Product Description

After five years of development and totaldedication, Nobel Prize winner, Dr. CarlForrester, and his team at a government backed research lab have perfected a machine that can pass as a human being: Prototype Model 2VR, known as Michael Smith.However, when the government removes Michael for a secret testing period, the doctor fears that they may use him for destructive purposes. This is a fair movie at best,with a poor but thoughtful ending, its an old 70's type of film on low budget and some poor acting, I'm a big fan of David Morse, so I'm very happy with it. Give this film a miss unless your a fan of Plummer or Morse,I only wrote this review because the existing one was so bad and misleading, I hope it was helpful.

I ACQUIRED THIS FILM MANY YEARS AGO , IN THE DAYS WHEN V H S WAS ALL THE RAGE ALSO I ACQUIRED THE EARLIER VERSION WITH CHRISTOPHER PLUMMER ISSUED IN 1983 .
THIS LATER VERSION FEATURING LANE LENHART, ROBERT TOSSBERG BRENDA SWANSON , PAUL COULJ, MICHEL COX, AND INTRODUCING SEBASTIAN SCANDIUZZI,THIS WAS THE CORRECT LIST OF ACTORS FOR THE 1992 VERSION THAT I AM STILL WAITING FOR TO COME OUT ON DVD . IF THERE IS ANY ONE OUT THERE THAT KNOWS OF A VERSION OUT PLEASE CONTACT.ITS NOT OFTEN THAT THE WRONG INFORMATION IS SHOWN ON THE AMAZON SITE ,BUT ITS HAPPENED THIS TIME AND I AM HAPPY TO CORRECT IT FOR OTHER BUYERS. ALTHOUGH THE PLOT IS ALMOST THE SAME ITS A WORTHY ADDITION TO ONES COLLECTION.I HOPE THAT AMAZON WILL ADJUST THE CREDITS TO THE CORRECT ACTORS AS MR PLUMMER ONLY WATCHED THIS VERSION (POSSIBLY) AND NOT ACTED IN IT

This is sci-fi, but don't expect a high tech thriller -- it's a well-written, well-acted, well-directed drama. The pace is on the slow side, but if you're in a laid-back mood, it's a nice little movie to kill an hour and a half with.

I wrote a review for the V.H.S. edition of this film, a few years ago, but it is gone now, because it is no longer available on V.H.S. and Amazon has completely removed it from their database. I saw this movie when it came out 25 years ago (1983). I've always liked it a lot. The scientist that created the android, gets very attached to it throughout this movie, because he and his wife were never able to have children of their own, so the human looking android is like a "son" figure for the scientist. I like that aspect of this film. The ending is sad, but Michael (the android), did the right thing. The government would have used him for the wrong reasons. Watch this movie and I think that you will like it.

Prototype is a great movie, despite the lack of (or the need for) the typical sci-fi special effects we've come to expect. The story line is solid and meaningful.

The DVD cover-art is a little misleading in the sense that it brings to mind such epic movies like "Terminator" - it's a marketing gimmick (IMO) that works - it's what got me to pick up the movie in the first place.
