"Read this with your heart. S.A. Reid has made me open mine, grabbing me and never letting go." --Tom WebbA Bear on Books.
"... the book is well-written and absorbing." -- Erastes, Speak Its Name

When Gabriel MacKenna enters Wentworth Prison in 1931, he promises himself two things: never to be buggered and never to turn prison queer. Tough, smart, and ruthless in a fight, he quickly makes a name for himself inside. But Gabriel, saved from the noose by a social crusader, is serving two life sentences. And life is a very long time to endure Wentworth with no comforts but prison food, card games and cigarettes. To survive endless days without the touch of another human being...

Five years after Gabriel's incarceration, Joey Cooper arrives at Wentworth. Every convict claims imprisonment through a miscarriage of justice, but Joey is truly blameless. Trained at Oxford as a physician, the young doctor is innocent of prison culture and too handsome for his own good. Facing eighteen years behind Wentworth's towering gates, Joey cannot hope to survive without protection. And protection is just what Gabriel MacKenna offers. At a price...

Warning: this book is an erotic romance. It contains adult situations and graphic sex.

Author's Note: This second edition also includes the bonus short story, CODA.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved this story so much!!!! 16 Jan. 2013

I bought this book not sure what to expect of two men in prison especially after their 1st 'encounter' to say the least. But as time went on I wanted to rejoice in the love the two men found in one another in their harsh reality. Both in prison and did not deserve to be. The ending I thought it was very fitting to be honest. But then the author gave us a little bit more...which yeah the tears were rolling, and I was very emotional. It was just the most perfect ending indeed. Loved it so much! Louise x

4.0 out of 5 stars good read 14 Feb. 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
For a book set in prison it is not all doom and gloom,it does depict the harsh and brutal conditions of prison at the beginning of the 20th century, set in the 1930s rape is common and the prisoners and guards are pretty brutal.
the main characters are well written but there is no HEA.
I liked the epilogue giving endings to some of the characters but saying any more would spoil the story.

5.0 out of 5 stars One to tug at the heartstrings 5 May 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I admit it, I had a little cry at the end of this book.

I wasn't sure if I was going to like it, mainly because I really didn't think I'd be able to get over the victim falls in love with rapist storyline. But it worked.

It ends up being a tender love story, you could really feel the intensity of love the men felt for each other, as well as the desperate need to find comfort together.

I didn't think it was particularly gritty, although I was thankful for that as I wanted to read a romance, not a brutal prison story.

Quite beautiful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hot and a must read x 23 Nov. 2014
Wow.....How can I love a convicted murderer and rapist so much as Gabriel McKenna......He really got into my heart and is in my top ten book boyfriends now along with his love Joey Cooper....This is an amazing read.....Not as hard a read as I thought it would be but omg.....Gabriels protection of Lonnie and his determination to not turn whilst serving his two life sentences.....Until he sees Joseph Cooper (view spoiler).....How he turns the tables to protect Joey for simple kisses which soon turns to love was beautiful.....Joey takes his time learning to trust Gabe but he soon realises that he loves him and their four years together are so sweet considering where they are....Yes you will love Gabriel...and you will love Joey...and Yes you will cry.... We all know it can't be a HEA but I'd say it's not far of if you read the extra bit at the end I loved those last few pages...Gabriel and Joey together at last x

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Novel 7 Feb. 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Adored the book. Great character building. The two main characters story was intense, romantic, compelling and touching.

The 1930's prison setting felt authentic and strong. The writing style was excellent and a few times really blew me away.

It's a story gay men will love and but also a story that anyone else would love to.

Highly recommend. 5 stars.
