The protection which is installed on an industrial power system is likely to be subjected to more difficult conditions than the protection on any other kind of power system. Starting with the many simple devices which are employed and covering the whole area of industrial power system protection, this book aims to help achieve a thorough understanding of the protection necessary. Vital aspects such as the modern cartridge fuse, types of relays, and the role of the current transformer are covered and the widely used inverse definite-minimum time overcurrent relay, the theory of the Merz-Price protection system and the development of the high-impedance relay system are critically examined. This new edition has come about in response to the dramatic change from the use of electro-magnetic relays to electronic and micro-processor relays which figure in practically all new installations. Therefore, although the theory and usage are the same, the application can be much improved owing to the increased range and accuracy and the added facilities provided with the modern relays. This book reflects the change and explains the technical advantages.

This book is a must for any engineer new to protective relaying, and who wants to get a clear understanding of protective relaying principles. The reader is introduced to the protection principles of the various plant equipment in a clear and easy to understand manner, starting from the component level, ie relays, current and voltage transfomers. The theory of fault calculations is then explained to refresh the reader's understanding before proceeding with the protective schemes of feeders, transformers, motors and generators. Throughout the book, practical examples complete with circuits diagrams and graphs are used to illustrate and reinforce the concepts taught. Having understood how the relays for the protecting the various equipment are being set, the reader is shown how the relays are being tested prior to commissioning. This section is often skipped in books with a more academic approach, but it is also where the author's practical experience and strength is shared with the reader. Finally, this book is written for the engineer who wants to understand and be "practical" about protective relaying and remain "practical" about it.

This book talks to electrical engineers like no other I've ever seen. It's suitable for all engineers from graduate to experienced. Easy on the maths but good on communicating an understanding of the principles and practical application, written by an experienced man who obviously loves his work. Small enough to keep in your bag when you're out and about, and priced so that you don't resent buying your own copy.

Generally good technical information. A bit of emphasis on "older style" electromechanical relays used for power system protection, but the principles are universal, and still apply to modern numerical relays. A very good choice for anyone who works "in the field."

I would certainly buy it again.
