Product Description

Review

This imaginative and comprehensive introduction to the sex industry is as welcome as it is timely... This is a rewarding and topical book that I would urge all interested parties to consult. Graham Scambler, Professor of Medical Sociology University College London
A remarkably thorough analysis of prostitution in contemporary society. Situating sex work at the intersection of economy, occupation, and emotion, the authors illuminate the complex forces that shape prostitution within an emerging global order. Bringing their analysis full circle, they close with a helpful exploration of the methods by which researchers are able to investigate an area of such danger and controversy. All in all, a courageous and important book. Jeff Ferrell, Visiting Professor of Criminology University of Kent, UK,and Professor of Sociology Texas Christian University, USA.
This excellent text fills a gap in the market as it explores the full range of issues covering sex work, policy and politics...A fascinating and informative text which will become the leading handbook in this area. Dr Louise Westmarland, Senior Lecturer in Criminology, The Open University

Format:Paperback
Prostitution has been increasingly studied in recent years, leading to a very substantial literature. At the same time it remains highly controversial, with an alliance of radical feminists and Christian fundamentalists, who advocate the abolition of prostitution, in one corner and advocates of a sex worker perspective, who assume that prostitution is unlikely to go away, and who therefore seek the best conditions for engaging in sex work, in the other. This book succinctly covers all the main areas of theory and policy, and is right up to date. It is presented as a text for students, but is actually useful for anyone who wants to get up to speed with the topic. A very minor reservation is that the authors basically belong to the sex worker perspective, and although they give a brief account of the abolitionist approach it would have been desirable to say just a bit more about it. However, with this as with everything else in the area, there are plenty of references in the book which would allow readers to follow up the issue and make up their own minds.
